View Full Version : New fairy wrasses in Quarantine

Just got these two females from my LFS and they're acclimating temp. I've been ghostfeeding the QT for over a month, had a ammonia spike early, nitrites, then both at zero for weeks (thought Dr. Tims was a waste, but it appeared to cycle extremely fast after an initial ammonia spike that would have killed any fish). Did 20% water changes every couple of days for the last week and a half, tested levels, and today I pulled the trigger.

LFS worker said they are a pintail fairy wrasse and a crescent tail fairy wrasse. Got a great deal on them. They're females, so look almost identical except for the tails. I'm just hoping they do well and wanted to share with everyone.

They've been released into the tank and are swimming at the top. I hope that's normal. (sorry for the sideways photos)

One has tried to jump and escape, but luckily I have a very tight lid with no holes.

Yeah be carful with that they are big jumpers

Yes most wrasses seem to enjoy the open water column.

Beautiful! I have been thinking about a carpenter wrasse for my display. Might have to go ahead and do it.

Swimming on the surface tells me you have an oxygen problem in your tank. Do you have a skimmer? Do you have your power heads pointed towards the surface? Either of these or both will improve your oxygen levels in your tank. Also what is the temp of your tank? The hotter the water the lower the oxygen content.

Very nice looking wrasses, don't be surprised if one or both don't turn male on ya. :D

Very nice looking wrasses. My tank is predominantly stocked with wrasses.

Are they still hanging at the top of the tank?? If so Dkuhlman. Good luck just my 2 cents.

What was your quarantine protocol?

They're in quarantine right now. Bottomless tank with dry rock that was cycled fishless. Powerhead, heater. They're eating today. I'm going to make sure they're still eating for a week and then do a couple rounds of prazipro over two weeks. Then three more weeks of observation.

Figured out the breathing and jumping: salinity. Newbie mistake. I had calibrated my refractometer with RODI water. I recalibrated as they were freaking out; this time with 35 ppt calibration fluid. I was off on my salinity by .005. I thought my salinity was ~1.020, which is was the LFS keeps, but it was actually more at 1.015... I slowly brought it back up to 1.019, but they were pretty lethargic until this morning. I hope this won't slowly kill them...

My powerhead is up near the surface to agitate the surface. Temp is a little low: at 73.

Both fish were doing great, eating and swimming. I put a brand-new heater and thermometer in the tank yesterday. Woke up and both fish were dead. Very frustrated. Temp was 76.

Looks like you have had some unstable parameters that could have took effect on the wrasses. Hopefully it will work out next time for you.
