I purchased a Bangaii cardinal about a week and a half ago. He is in a 10 gallon bare bottom quarantine tank with a blue green chromis. He hasn't been eating great however I have been able to get him to nibble on frozen mysis. He was fine this morning when I left for work but when I got home from my 12 hour shift he was lying on the bottom on his side. I initially thought he was already dead but when I scooped him up in a container (he didn't fight at all) I could see that he was still breathing albeit slowly. He has no abnormalities in his appearance. Tank info is as follows:

Ammonia- 0
nitrite- 0
nitrate- close to 0
temp- 74
specific gravity- 1.025

I am running no treatments at this time. The chromis is happy as a lark and begging for food. I recently ran across posts about cyanide fishing for this species. I will admit that I have no idea if he was wild caught and if so by what means. Does this sound like cyanide poisoning to you guys? His acclimation was not drawn out since my water was very close to the lfs water. I'm so heart broken over this little guy. I named him Ned. :sad2:

74 is pretty cold. I'd warm the tank slowly to at least 78 and make sure he has a safe dark place (especially since chromis can be grouches about sharing space) to hide and just hope for the best. You can use anything for that, PVC piping, clean coffee mugs or kids toys. Just a plastic or ceramic type of thing that's a little bigger than the fish but still snug.

If it helps I don't know how common wild caught benghaiis are anymore. I think they were short-listed for endangered status recently and breeding is getting more common. On top of that, I'm just not sure how much of the cyanide stuff is a boogieman for when fish just die.

Agreed on the temp. Raise it and see if that helps.

Also Bangaii are school fish. U should look into getting another one (female) or trade it in for a different fish.
