so pretty much all of my fish have white stringy poop but they are all GREAT eaters and swim all day and are pretty fat. They have had this for months now which is why I am thinking it is most likely from cheato from my sump. I only have a problem with it because it floats all around my tank and gets stuck on my SPS. most pieces are a couple inches long

I am wondering if this is a parasite or if it is possibly from when cheato gets in the DT and the tangs eat that? I feed them brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, flakes and nori. They get flakes 4 times a day from an auto feeder and usually i feed nori once a day on three rocks that i tie it to with rubberbands for the tangs and angels. I feed the frozen brine or mysis shrimp a couple times a week.

I am wondering what your guys thoughts are.

Long stringy white excrement is a hall mark for worms.

Or eating mysis shrimp.

how would i confirm they have worms and how do you treat it? They have been swimming around a ton, eating perfectly fine, fat fish. would it spread to all the fish in the tank?

Or eating mysis shrimp.

they definitely eat mysis shrimp multiple times a week

I am still convinced that this is cheato and nothing serious. I will post a picture later and see what yall think then.

I see Prazipro in your future.

Treated food is another option.

Post this in the fish disease section. All your fish aren't constipated at the same time. Most likely internal parasites, very common and easy to treat.

That picture look like parasites, others will confirm. Antibiotic treated food is what I did a while back. Now I just QT and treat everyone with Prazi haven't seen any symptoms since. Same food, zero signs.

thanks, can someone please move this to the fish disease section?

Bacterial infections are another likely cause.

Whoops sorry, somehow I overlooked this.

That looks like nematodes (round worms or thread worms) to me. Fish can sometimes live years with worms. In the wild, it's not uncommon for fish to have worms which is why prophylactic treatment is so important.

Eventually, the worms will become so prolific in the fish that it will die. Here are some pics of an autopsy i did on a cleaner wrasse where you can clearly see the nematodes.

Eventually you will need to de-worm them. Your only real option at this point since the display tank is infected, is to treat the display tank with praziquantel.

can I treat the display tank with that even when I have a ton of SPS and snails, etc?

Also the strings in the poop are not even close to as big as those in your wrasse. They honestly are about the exact size of cheato which is why I thought it was that. it also is only in my fish that eat nori or that would eat cheato if it got to the DT.

Its not in the clownfish, firefish or anthias. So when I said all my fish I should've specified that I meant my fish that would eat cheato when it gets to the DT

PraziPro is reef safe I believe. I think I have read it could do a number on your worm population if there are a lot of bristle worms in the tank.

Every once in a while...like maybe 4 times in the past 2 months...my clownfish has had an episode of long white stringy feces that I've seen. he was previously treated with 2 doses of Prazi while in qt....so now what? He is the only fish in the tank.

I have2 more fish scheduled to come out of qt very soon so I'd obviously like to address this quickly.
