macro in drain section of sump?

I'm planning to redo my sump and am thinking about running a 2-sectioned sump - drain/fuge on one side, return on the other. I have my reasons as to why, but my question is this - is there any reason that macro algae SHOULDN'T be put in the drain section of sump? I don't run a skimmer, so that's a non-factor in this conversation.

It will be fine as long as water can always escape into the next section and there is plenty of light.

Most people don't just because they put filter socks in the drain chamber. Without the filter socks taking up that room there is no reason you can't.
