:furious:So ****ed my electric blue hermit just ate my first & brand new deresa clam F***!!! Happened within 2/3 hours, the crab is pretty big for a hermit about the size of golfball. There goes a quick 50 bucks

Sorry about the rant but let this be a warning!!!!!

I would question whether or not the clam was alive when it ate it. Maybe still "responsive" but it very well could have smelled dead or dying. Lots of clean up animals like that will descend on "ill" animals that may appear okay, but in reality are not.

If the clam was in good health, are you sure you have a clean up hermit and not a predatory one?

That sized crab is risky.

Generally most crabs are a bad idea in a reef system.

what kind of hermit is it. gold ball size hermit is pretty big one. think only a few can get that big. unless your a little off on the size

Do its legs look like this one's? This is my Thin Striped Hermit and he's about the size of a golf ball. Doesn't eat corals, but he is a bit of a bulldozer. Never seen an electric blue get that big, but maybe they do.

The clam was just bought from the lfs. He crawled on it once it closed, knocked it over and I reset it, but then I didn't pay attention for the next hour and found him ripping the flesh out. Got him off the clam and the clam was already ripped apart and not responding/closing. He is an electric blue knuckle crab his shell is about the size of a golf ball maybe a bit smaller like a ping pong ball; he is pretty strong. When I grabbed him he clung on the clam all the way out the water no problem. He played Probably pryed it open

Damn, that does stink. I am watching mine closely as I know crabs can go rogue if they get hungry. I am contemplating banishing mine to the sump.

Yeah man I regret not doing that as soon as I seen him crawl on the clam the first time

Ouch, Sorry to hear your loss. I didn't know that a hermit crab can be that big.

My LFS has one that is almost a foot long.

+1 Hermits and brittle stars can get a bad rap sometimes when they are just doing what they're supposed to be doing.

Only hermits I put in my tank are those dwarf blue legs. Had the Halloween. They never ate anything but being so big they would knock things over. I like the little blue legs because they get into crack that snails can't
