Hello, I picked up this mantis from a friend of mine who owns a local fish store. He said a customer brought it in as a hitchhiker. I perused the mantis ID page but couldn't find anything quite like it. It is approximately 3" long. The pleopods are a vibrant hot pink color.

It is in the genus Gonodactylaceus. Probably G. glabrous although it could be G. graphurus. It is a female.

I thought G. glaborous as well, but the G. graphurus pictures I found looked similar as well.

Guess I'll have to try looking at that 6th segment.

From what I've read, these both live in shallow water so bright lighting would be tolerated?

Both species are quite variable with respect to color and pattern although G. graphurus is more likely to have longitudinal striping. Both live shallow and can tolerate bright, broad spectrum lighting. Both are powerful smashers for their size and are quite aggressive. G. graphurus is more common in Australian waters - G. glabrous is more likely to be from Indonesia.

Mine is quite curious, she comes out and checks me out. Tries to smash anything new added to the aquarium though.

Currently she accepts PE mysis, shrimp pieces, and Hikari massivore pellets.

Going to order an assortment of hermit crabs to give her some entertainment. Thank you for all the info!
