Hello All, it's been a while since I have been around but I have a question and I am hoping that someone will be able to help me as Google has been of no help to me on this one!! I am trying to figure out what this is poking up out of the sand in my tank. The tank is well established, been up and running for about 7 years. In the last couple of weeks I have noticed these in 2 different areas of the tank. One area they are in almost a prefect circle, maybe 4 inches in diameter and in this spot in the picture they are more in a random shape. They are small and soft because they move with gentle water flow. They are sticking up out of the sand maybe 1/4 inch. I don't know how to go about trying to identify them so if anyone has any suggestions please let me know. Also if more information is needed let me know and I will try to provide it as well!! Thanks in advance for any help!!

Do they have a crown? They're probably just small feather dusters.

They don't look like feather dusters to me but I guess they could be a type that I've never seen. They don't have anything coming out of the top on any of them in either place that they are in the tank.

Can you get a closer shot of a few of them?

I will try again with my wife's camera this afternoon when I get home. I tried once before but it was the patch in the back and I didn't have any luck. I'll try again with the patch that I show here. Surely if I could get that with my phone I could get one with her camera!

This is the closest picture that I can take of them but it isn't much better. They are tiny. For reference that shell in the picture is maybe 3/4 of an inch across.

While you wait on someone who may be able to just identify them, have you reached down and pulled any out at all? Are they all connected, soft, hard? With the tank and sandbed so mature have you checked nutrient levels?

Sure looks like some sort of tube worm though, even if not feather dusters.

I have reached down and tried to pull some out but they are so tiny I can't just grab them, it's almost like the just disappear when you try to grab it, not like go away in the sand but like dissipate. You can't feel that there is anything there when you grab it, it's like it has no substance. I haven't done a water test in a while, may be a good time to do that and see if I see anything strange.

I'm still going with small feather dusters, although Spionid worms is another possibility too though. If you haven't already you might want to check the tank at night with a flashlight.

Well it definitely seems like its nothing to worry about or someone would have known. Thanks for all the help.
