It's any plethora of algaes that plague new tanks ( from the looks I'm going to assume it's a new tank) . I wouldn't worry about it and consider it par for the course with the new tank/rock.

Most likely your gonna go through a seriously ugly algae phase with new rock especially dry rock ( seems to be what you have). I think as long as you have things in place to keep nutrients in check ride it out and wait for it to subside on its own.

Hard to tell, but looks like it could be cyanobacteria or Byropsis. There are so many different algae out there.

how is that possible that I have been having cyno on the same spot and not growing since even before I put livestock in?? and it is only on the glue that I used to join two rocks. It is not on any rocks.

But I guess it is hard to tell from the pictures. Maybe I should try to do a large water change.

Is your tank cycled? It looks new. How old is it.

New/dead rock will grow all kinds of things.. What you are experiencing is literally a drop in the bucket to what most likely Is to come over the next year or so.. Don't trip out, Don't do anything out of the ordinary and if you can remove it do so.

Your gonna have all kinds of things growing out of nowhere so be prepared and don't make any drastic changes, it's all part of a tank maturing.. In all honesty the rocks have not even begun to exhibit the growth that comes along with a new set up.. It looks pretty for a bit,Then ugly and back to pretty if you maintain it correctly.

This is exactly the correct advice!!! I started my current tank 2 years ago and it has finally stabilized a few months ago. One thing I know about this hobby is to keep it simple, go slow, and let nature do its thing.

The most important thing you can do for water quality is to have an excellent source of RODI for top off, get your ATO dialed in, get a good system for mixing salt, and do regular water changes.

The most important thing you can do for your reef is good lighting and flow.

If you focus on these things and not react to the natural changes your tank is going through you will not regret it in a year. Your tank WILL get very ugly, before it looks nice.

One more piece of advice, Bayer all your corals so you don't get in wanted bugs, and QT all your fish for a month.

I use coral RX dip for my corals, and I QT my clownfish for 2 weeks. I will not keep fishes that prone to sickness such as Angels and Tangs.

My fish plan is clown, firefish, cardinal, blenny, goby, and shrimp. That is it

II will not keep fishes that prone to sickness such as Angels and Tangs.

All fish prone to sickness, plus you could not keep an angel or tang in your tank due to size.

Hair aglae, is sign of new tank that is not established. Your rocks will soon turn brown and diatoms will appear and more hair algae.

Just part of the process, enjoy.

Ask for advice, give rude responses and answer a question someone else had with improper techniques lol.. Have fun buddy.. Let us know how your extended 2 week quarantine process goes on only fish that don't get sick..

Guys, GROW UP!!! Canada, You want experienced people to answer questions and we subscribe to the thread to help. Now you have this RETARDED exchange? This is NOT how to learn in this hobby. Heuer, it is ok to lose on a forum.

ALL AND I MEAN ALL fish are prone to sickness. Some are more prone to different things than others, but all can be affected by all sickness.

I QT for a month because I don't want ich. I have been doing this for a long time and have learned to go VERY SLOW. I have 700gal of water for 2 years and only have 4 fish and 20 of so corals. Not because I can't support a lot more, but because I wanted to get everything running perfectly. That has been my focus.

Now I am starting to stock my tank and plan to invest a couple K in livestock over the next 3 months. Then in 2 years I will have the tank I want.

This is a great hobby where you always learn no one knows everything, there are a million ways to do everything, and each way is good if it works for you.

well.....there are always 2 sides of each story...and you can choose only to look at one side of it or even fraction of it. Rude responses get rude responses. Retard responses get retard responses. Simple as that.

Anyway, moving on. I will try to remove the dark hair algae with Hydrogen peroxide. Has anyone tried this method on hair algae before?

There are always two sides to a coin.......

Any how like I suggested before to you the best way to remove hair algae is to remove the nutrients causing it. But it also has to do with tank maturity. I have never tried hydrogen peroxide. Are you planning to dose it or scrub the rocks with it?

TheRuss

Well then, like I said in my last post, it is ok to lose [emoji1], let's move on.

I know what it is like to see algae and want to treat it, but I would not recommend it right now. It is going to bad, you can't stop it. When it does get you a clean up crew.

Let me ask you this,

Explain your top off method
How do you do it
Where do you get you water

Explain you water change schedule
How do you do it
Where do you get/how do you get your water

I know these are very basic and seem elementary, but this is the MOST IMPORTANT thing you can master for your system. My current system has been up for 2 years, how I do the items above has been evolving and changing and I am finally happy with my method, until I decide to change it [emoji1]

@TheRuss, the funny thing is this dark black algae (which usually occurred in freshwater tank) only grow on the dry glue portion. Not on the rocks at all. And they started to grow during cycle even before any livestock. I used Fauna Marin Aquascape fix glue to aquascape my rocks. My plan is to use Q tip and dab over the counter HP (not the highly concentrated ones) onto the algae.

I already have CUC which consists of 3 Trochus, 2 Margarita, and 2 Nassarius. I am going to get 2 Cerith snails this weekend to add.

I am using SMART ATO micro and ALWAYS use RODI water for WC and ATO. I have Spectrapure RODI at home just for the tank.

5 gallon WC is done weekly, and I just bumped it up to 10 g WC started last week.
