Eggcrate? 1/4 mesh? 1/8mesh? [emoji21]

I want to put some wrasses in my tank and currently have eggcrate on top with a chunk cut out for my return pipe that comes up over the back of the tank. I'm assuming this is not going to work well for me (and even more so for the fish) long-term.

What is 'best' to use? Is it a PITA to make a screen lid from Home Depot parts? Should I just order a kit from a reef place? Order a pre-made lid?

Also, what about HOB equipment and power cords? Auto-feeders? Wouldn't these necessitate holes in the top rendering the fancy cover only semi-effective at best?

I just finished building mine after procrastinating for a few months. I recently took down my canopy and went topless. And I've list about $300 worth of wrasses since doing so. I used some aluminum extrusions as "bridges" to get around my return and light brackets. Worked pretty good!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170213/0f51396c292b1c5cb48411675ab9dd56.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170213/fdca77b4d48554683798f43720ff5344.jpg

Looks really nice!
Can you give out some more details about your diy.
Where did you buy the aluminum.
What size. Other equipment.
I wanted to copy your design:)

I can't quite see how the aluminum extrusions work in the pics (because I'm not sure which part is the light bracket vs the outside of the screen vs the extrusion. I'm bad at this lol). It does look sealed nicely though so you defiantly have a good solution.

Are you using 1/4in mesh? Does your autofeeder need an extrusion? Does the screen interfere at all with the auto-feeder function?

I don't mean to answer for billwill, but you can get the aluminum frame at Home Depot. They sell a kit which includes everything needed to make a custom sized screen lid (minus the screen). I bought some 1/4" mesh from MD. Total cost for my 24x24 was around 20 bucks.

Straight up BRS screen kit. The aluminum extrusion was from work, but 1/4" x 2" aluminum plate would work just fine. Hacksaw goes through it super easy, though you'll need a dremel to cut out the inside. Build the screen first, install the aluminum bridge pieces, then cut out the screen frame. Cut the screen as needed.
This is a 90g, so two screens of 22" x 17" roughly.

Here is my screen top.

Most of the parts came from Home Depot including the frame but the netting came from BRS. I couldn't find the right size that lets enough light through in Home Depot or Lowes.

I made it in 3 parts so I only remove the middle part for feeding and adding seaweed.

What are your thoughts, on using a black egg crate sheet cut to size?

Mine is similar to Billwill and Oseymour. I bought an aluminum window screen kit from Lowes and then ordered 1/4" clear netting off Amazon. Even though my tank has a middle divider on the top, I just made one single large screen. I cut a piece of black vinyl to block light in the corner overflow as well. One thing to keep in mind with eggcrate is it acts as a light diffuser too so it's not as ideal as the clear mesh.

Eggcrate is 1/2in (I believe, going off memory) so fish can jump clear through if they try hard enough
