View Full Version : How do you clean your tall (150/210/220) gallon tanks...?

I keep going back and forth over my new set up and whether I should get a 180 gallon or 210 gallon.

I want the 210 gallon for the extra showing area (4" more), the extra water volume, and the extra area for fish to swim, etc.

However, every time I assure myself I want the 210 - I hear someone with a 180 say that they are glad they got the 180 because it is easier for maintenance, etc.

How do you with tall tanks clean them?

I assume you use some sort of ladder/step stool?

Do you find it hard to clean? Especially the overflows?

I clean both my 180 and my 75 the same way. With a magnet. Doesn't matter how tall they are.

Robosnail is another alternative, if you're into gadgets.

Well a 180 and 75 aren't considered "tall" tanks :)

They are 24+" inches tall - the 150/210/220 are 30" inches tall.

And yes, I realize you use a magnet - but is that all you do to clean your tank is clean the glass?

You don't clean the sand? Clean out overflows? Etc.?

I currently have a 110 and it's 30" tall, plus stand is 36" tall. I use a step stool and am able to do most of what I need to without much trouble. Urchins keep the back glass and overflow in the tank fairly clean. Occasionally, I'll even out some of the sand and shift it around, but I don't clean it (very fine oolite sand and it stays pretty clean with help of CUC and flow in the tank.) Don't really touch inside the overflow either and in the year or so this tank has been running, there's not much in there except some feather dusters that have grown. Honestly, I haven't found it any worse to maintain than my last tank which was 24" tall.

I have a 30" tall 265 and have not a single regret from the extra height. Stool, scraper extension and a set of medical forceps is all I need.

My 230 is 31 inches high. My CUC cleans my sand, my Flipper cleans the glass. I occasionally use a plastic grabber if I need to reach something at the bottom, and I stand on a stepstool or bench if I need to. I can always take advantage of temporary lower water level during water change if I really want to be able to reach the bottom. I prefer the height for a number of reasons including aesthetics and increased volume. I have never once wished I could go back to my old 24 inch tall 180.

Stool + getting wet... I'd recommend the 30" height. Well worth it.

lmao That's awesome!

But in answer to the question...same as everyone else. A razor on a stick, a magnet, stick my whole arm in the tank...whatever.

I use a Tunze Easy-care magnet for much of it. My 102 gal tank with canopy is taller than I am, ca. 6 feet, so I use a painter's ladder to get height to reach down in. I still can't quite reach the sandbed. Fortunately there's nowhere my fish (large gold domino damsel et al) don't churn up the sand, so that gets taken care of. Somewhere down there is also a fighting conch that gets regularly tossed from pillar to post, but keeps on ticking.
