Hello Guys,

Yesterday I witnessed my orange back fairy wrasse catching a rather large live mysid shrimp. He was struggling to keep and orient the shrimp so he couldn't swallowed it and actually I was sure the shrimp would get away. Than I witnessed something quite amazing, he went next to the rock and started to smash the shrimp onto it. After the shrimp was dead (or stunned), he simply oriented the shrimp and swallowed it.

Do you think if this counts as tool use? I will try to get a video clip of this.

That would be neat to see.

This is normal behavior for wrasse. If there is a big chunk in my LRS that's too big for the wrasse they will grab it and dash for a rock to bang it on till they get it soft/small enough to swallow. It's very entertaining as the chunk usually changes hands(mouths) several times before being consumed!

I have a melanarous & 3 leopards & they all do it if they get a piece of food that is to big for them. They will smash it against the rock.
