This thing spouted out of nowhere. What is it?

Yes it is mermaid's cup, Acetabularia species. It is actually a single cell species, a very large single celled algae.

Unfortunately it disappeared overnight.

if it reappears burn it with fire! Mine started out with a single one and now my reef is covered and has been for over a year. The cups are the final stages; prior to that they form a thicket of stalks with little wispy hairs and the from the mess the stalk emerges with the cup. They'll eventually turn white as they are somewhat calcium based. The only thing that i have had that'll eat is is an urchin

I've only seen one other plant but also recently added an urchin which mowed down everything. But they are cool looking

The solitary stalks are. The mat isn't.

Those are the small discs and the Matt. The larger ones with rise up, each small disc doesn't necessarily morph into the tall ones

I had some of the green mat but thought it was hair algae. Never saw any discs.

Yea had a few show up on a snail. Now they are EVERYWHERE. Jury still out if I care or not though. Life is life, as long as things are growing in my tank I'm usually happy. None have been so bad yet to form a huge mat. Just clumps everywhere.

Lucky 6-line, I always thought acetabularia were the coolest thing but heard they don't hold up well in aquariums.
