I'd really like to purchase a single, captive-bred Rainford's goby, but all I see lately are sold as a trio through Divers Den. Is there a bond among fish sold as a trio, or is it more for the convenience of selling a group (or just marketing)? I've thought about asking my lfs if they'd be willing to give me store credit for two if I brought them in the shipping bag.

IMO, it would be ok to split up a trio. Any pairs of fish I have purchased later decided that they did not care for their mate...

I figured DD did the trio thing to appeal to hobbyists that want a small group of fish that are getting along (at least at time of sale...). IMO it is really hard to get a pair or trio of fish from just buying two or three and crossing your fingers.

I bought three at once (out of same tank at LFS). They didn't get along at all. They spread out and made three different territories in the tank (90 gallon). There were violent fights if two encountered each other.
