View Full Version : wrasse in open lid tank

Good evening.
I would like to add a few wrasse to my DT. However per liveaquaria they require a tight lid. Today I saw wrasse in open lid tanks in my LPS.
I wonder if I should give it a try.

Is there anyone who keeps wrasse in open lid DT?

Oh yeah because a local fish store always does the "right" thing :hmm4:

Go for it.. But don't be surprised when you find a carpet surfer :)

PS.. I once saw a guy eating light bulbs..

^^^What he said^^^

IME, ANY fish can be a jumper. Wrasses are what I would consider an almost certain jumper. Maybe not right away, but sooner or later, you will find it on the floor.

A DIY mesh top (window screen frame and 1/4" mesh from BRS) will take care of that issue for you.

"Eggcrate" (lighting diffuser actually) is big enough that most fish will just use it as a target to aim for as they jump. It will also, as the name implies, diffuse your light considerably.

Everyone once and a while I hear my wrasse hit the lid. So fast you dont even see it. I would not hesitate, but be prepared if carpet surfing happens. Again to quote above, simple screens are easy to create. You can do small tab on the inside and make it flush with the surface so it is not as noticeable.

You're lucky enough to get a wrasse that's healthy and lives.... why push it

If you want a really nice anti-jump lid look at "artfully acrylic" I have one & it's pricey but real nice!!

I have a rimless with a DIY screen top that sits inside and is flush with top of the glass. Looks great. I also have a wrasse.

Yeah, I used a DIY screen door kit and 1/4" clear screen. It looks pretty good and it was inexpensive and easy to do.

FWIW I have dropped food in the tank and some of my wrasses have come out of the water and hit my screen going for the food.

My wrasses have hit the screen top several times just when I'm there. Who knows how often it happens when I'm not around. Definitely need a top!

I use the 1/8" mesh from BRS. I used 1/4" before, but small fish found a way through it!

I mean I have a cleaner wrasse in my tank with no lid or hood and a Melanurus Wrasse in a frag tank with no lid.

Everyone on the internet is a guy, until proven otherwise.

As for the wrasse, open top=wrasse jerky. I use an egg crate top and one still managed to get out :(

wait sk8r is a lady. no wonder she loves damsels its all making sense.

also your lucky enough to get a healthy wrasse, i have purchased 7 wrasses they all lived, so heath no sure why you said that.

yes most wrasses are jumpers, they wont last long if you don't have a lid. i think what mcgyvr (the man) was trying to tell you in his nice little way, was just because you see it in pet store doesnt mean it will succeed in your tank long term. that being said i do have a 6 line wrasses in my frag tank without a lid, i found them not to be jumpers, but maybe becuase they are the devil

Just another data point... I have a glass top except for the back two inches. I figured that was good enough for a flasher wrasse. Nope. Only took two weeks for it to find its way out and carpet surf.

100% coverage (and not egg crate) is a must.

Frankly, you really shouldn't leave any tank uncovered, but especially when a wrasse is involved. It needs to fit well, too.

Why take the chance on any fish, just cover it. It's not expensive and its easy. Not only are the fish expensive, but they are your pets that count on you for care.

And MacGyver, the mullet never went out of style here in Pittsburgh. They do a mullet cam at pirates games, quite amusing.

I lost 2 fish in one week from jumping out, will never run a tank again without at least the 1/4 mesh screen top on it.

I ran my old 35g open-top, and have never lost a fish to jumping. When I moved everything to a 90g, I added a couple of wrasses and put a screen top on. Within a week they have tried jumping multiple times. I have had my Lubbock's wrasse and yellow coris for years, and I know they would have been crispy-dead if I didn't have a top.

Lost my Margin Wrasse this past week. Tank is covered except for a little section that I had covered with loose egg crate. I thought that because of the location it couldn't get speed to jump out or knock the egg crate off. Came home to find the egg crate and Margin behind the tank.

Had a fish jump through a 4" deep tube under my automatic feeder. Crafty bastards. A lot of people have a fairly cavalier "its just a fish" attitude, but these are often wild-caught fish that aren't in infinite supply, and it is sad when they die from an easily preventable means.

In a canopy could I just cover the openings of the canopy with mesh? That way nothing can happen

I have a melanurus and no lid in a 100g tank. It has not jumped and neither has any other first in the year I've had this tank. The wrasse definitely is annoying with splashing water though.

+1 for all of you.
I lost a wrasse this way a few years back. During a WATER CHANGE, no less - when I had my back turned to reach for the hose coming from the barrel where I mix my R.O. water with the salt.
It's the moment you're not paying attention!!!! :(

If you're worried about oxygen flow into your tank do what the other posters have said on here - make lids with a fine screen mesh! Easy to do and not all that expensive!!

You really don't want any of us "guys" having to go and prove this now, do you? :uzi:

And by all means, cover your wrasse, no one wants to see it on the floor.

I had 2 wrasses & gobies in my last set-up with no jumpers ever.I had 0 aggressive tank mates, they all lived in peace. Wrasses were a yellow corris & African leopard & a couple firefish gobies, I think peace was the key! Who knows though, maybe they would of eventually jumped, had them around 2 years

I once found my dog chewing on a piece of clownfish jerky . My most recent loss was a blue spot jawfish. I have a screen but was messing around in the tank and forgot to put it back on. :sad2:

Save yourself some pain and heartache and get a screen top for your tank.

I just, as in 30 minutes ago, had my brand spankin' new Red Headed Solon Wrasse go carpet surfing.

It sucked.

Looking at building a screen this week.

Do any of you use the screen mesh under a canopy? I probably have eight inches between the bottom of the canopy and the top of the water. The whole back of the canopy is open. I guess to be safe I should use the screen?

Yes, You need to have a screen top even under a canopy.

Not really, so long as there are no ledges to land on or any uncovered (screen or otherwise) openings then a canopy will work fine for containing jumpers.
My 210 had a fulling enclosed canopy and I never lost a fish to jumping, plenty tried but simply fell back into the water. I did occasionally find a fish in the overflow box, it can be a real PITA getting them out especially in a 30"tall tank.

Theres always a ledge or lip of the tank the fish can land on, and 90% of canopies have an open back.

I made a mesh top but after getting a custom canopy/cabinet made I'm using the old top as a "backstop" across the back of the tank. So far (5 years) it works like a charm.

air2mag
03/21/2017, 06:29 AM
I like the backstop idea. I though of just covering the back opening with screen material. Maybe I'll give that a go.

I just ordered the screen top kits from BRS. I put a long nose hawk in my tank today and he tried three or four jumps for freedom. I could see it wouldn't be that hard for him to hit the rim and flop out even with the canopy. So, screen top with a canopy for me.
