Most SPS do..

I need to get in the habit of taking pics like that..
I'm always like "was that stub there before? "

I never could figure which grew faster caps or birdsnest? When you get a chance create a couple frags. I lost my mother colony a few years ago, but since I had so many frags it did not take long for the frags to become much larger than there mother colony. Enjoy.

Yes...that is great growth. I swear I can almost see growth on a daily basis on my birdsnest.

Yes sir. Some birds grow faster than others. I have another one that has purple polyps that I got the same day and same size. It's only grown about 1/8 as much as my green

As a matter of fact the one behind the green one in the picture on the bottom

Impressive. You're gonna need a bigger tank!

Not sure the type, but after less than 4 months it seems to be doing pretty well despite a cheap black box light.

Thanks for genera idea. Sure looks like it! I’m wondering if it’s not a fan of the lighting. It seems to be growing more sideways than up. Will have to try fragging a few small pieces and moving it around the tank to see.

Most times, the growth pattern is based more on flow and not lighting, which tends to blanket the tank. If it's growing sideways, it may be too close to a powerhead.

Birdsnest are some of the fastest growing corals, almost to the point where they become a weed because they can choke out other corals nearby, and consume CA and alk. And yes, some grow faster than others, the sour apple and pink being some of the fastest growers, while ponope being the slowest.

It’s under one of my 2 weak powerheads, but a good 4 inches below any real flow (easy to tell when feed). Pretty soon will grow into contact with my large colt though. Will they chemi-war?

stylos like good light and strong flow. the stronger the flow, the thicker the branches i've found

They may fight for space. Just keep an eye on it.

Birdsest are Seriatopora, not stylos, which typically have thicker branches than Seriatopora.

I think what he posted pictures of is a stylo, not a Birdsnest. Here’s my purple stylo (10 months growth)and the polyps in his pictures seems similar. 388910388911388912

That purple stylo is one of my favorites.

However, the frag that Oiler3535 has not a stylo, it's commonly known as the Green Tip Orange Birdsnest aka sour apple birdnest:

The green stylo is typically more stubby. it's funny because even in ORA's description, they say it looks like a birdsnest.

Green Stylophora or Cats Paw Coral has thick, compact short branches with brilliant green to teal blue polyps. Somewhat similar in appearance to the Green Birdsnest, but much thicker structure with very rounded branch tips and overall plump form.

No worries. As I was looking for images to show the differences, I noticed that people were completely mixing the two up!

General rule of thumb is the short and stubby version is a stylo, and the longer branchy version is a birdsnest.

DNak, mine looks exactly like the bottom 2 pictures. The polyps are not bubbly, but in little almost circular clumps. Just not nearly as pretty green as your pics. Cheap lighting :(

Option, that purple one is awesome!

I can never get growth like that.
