So here is a shot of the tank, debating a couple different kinds of setups.

1. Whole tank full of macros, caulerpa on the sand and others on the rocks

2. Macros on the rocks only and photosynthetic gorgonians/fungias/clams on the sand.

Any thoughts?

I favor all plants. The needs of corals and plants are pretty different. I think you'll have more success focusing on one or the other.

It almost requires a full mind shift from reef tank to plant tank. Instead of keeping nutrients super low, you need to keep them high for plants. You may find plants more challenging than expected. I think plants help you to think of your tank as more of an ecosystem, rather than a box with a bunch of life support gizmos.

And if you turn out to have a green thumb, you can always add corals later.

Best of luck with whatever you choose to do!

Weeeeellll, I have to admit a dirty secret, I've done freshwater planted tanks and ponds for years..... Don't tell any of the coral folk.

That's perfect experience! I did the same. Combining those knowledge sets will be helpful.

Just in case you are interested, I have a display refugium with several macro algae. And I also have 3 gorgonians, 2 leathers and a big paly in the same tank and they all seem very happy together.
