I've browsed the boards for a long time but this will be my first time posting.

After 5 years out of the hobby I'm finally ready to get back in. This will be my fourth reef aquarium and by far the smallest.

I've learned a lot from my previous tanks so this build has been well thought out. I decided to do an Innovative Marine-AIO because I don't have much space but wanted to do something nice for my daughter. I'm confident that with the correct planning I can overcome the limitations of the setup to keep SPS.

I'll be running a full zeovit setup and surprisingly the reactor works very well in this respect for both flow and ease of agitating the stones. I'll also be running two skimmers to hopefully control nutrients enough to keep picky corals. I'll also be running a Tunze Osmolator and Two Part Dosing Kit to stabilize water chemistry in the smaller setup (All of my previous builds were 200+ gallons).

The tank is cycling now with Dry Carib-Sea Special Grade Reef Sand and Fiji Live Rock. Here is the equipment thus far along with a few pictures.

Radion G4-XR30W Pro with RMS
Ecotech Reeflink
Vortech MP10-QWD x 2

I just got back in, from FOWLR 90 gal 15 years ago, and picked up the IM 40 as well. Very happy with tank, and IM skimmer is working great.

What are you going to run in the reactor ??

It's a sleek tank LX and very straightforward which I was looking for. I'm going to run zeovit stones through the reactor although a lot of folks would run GFO or Bio-Pellets.

whats the main performance difference between the Tunze 9004 and 9004 dc? what advantage does a dc pump give you? is it worth the additional 50 $?

Pnorris11
04/07/2017, 06:50 AM
Hi Steve, I actually went with the DC just because it was rated higher in LPH of air. The skimmer does allow you to control skimmate and air intake from the DC which is nice. I don't know about the other Tunze because I don't have it but I'm actually very pleased with both skimmers on the tank.

The tank is doing great thus far. I've done quite a few tanks and I must say I'm very pleased with the zeovit system. Nutrients have gone from sky high to undetectable following the cycle.

The tank is now stocked with four fish and quite a few corals, mostly acropora, all of which have great color and have nice growth. My only problem was introducing dwarf angel which are pecking all the corals in the tank, and since introduction PE on acros has diminished greatly.

Not sure what to do with the Angelfish at this point....I'll try to post some pictures today but this site doesn't want to let me. Any advice?

pics or it didn't happen. I have had problems with dwarf angels as well. Dunno how people get so lucky with them. I would return it to the store if possible for some store credit. You choose some serious nice gear for the tank. good thing is you will be able to upsize the tank easily without much more investment. Maybe a 36x24x24 tank next with sump ;)

The Live Rock is collecting some brown bacterial film from overdosing ZeoBak and ZeoStart so backing off these for now and will be monitoring nutrients. Nitrate and Phosphate are undetectable currently.

This is pretty frustrating. I consider myself pretty technology savvy and can't post any pictures on this site. Do you have to be a programmer to get pictures to post here?

I have followed the instructions from other threads on how to post pictures from photo bucket but they won't load. I guess I can't keep them here. Maybe it has something to do with the fact I've made many posts but still have zero posts listed.

I've used every link in Photobucket and selecting the yellow Picture Icon before pasting in the link.

This is what everyone has suggested but it does not work for me?

Is there some other step I should be taking?

Here is an update with some pictures. Let's see if this works...

The tank is progressing nicely and acropora are coloring well and showing new growth tips. The lemon peel and flame angel are problematic with LPS but leave the SPS and Zoanthids alone thus far.

Im battling a little brown bacteria slime that is common with zeovit but I'm having a little trouble beating it. I assume it should stabilize in time and patience is the key.

Thanks, Tapatalk is much better. It was frustrating trying to get pictures up. I thought it worked and then they didn't show. Now it looks like they're all on here.

Thanks guys! I wanted to do an Acropora garden in the top with an area for a few different color monti-caps. Right now I have orange, purple, and green and a few zoanthids on the bottom left.

I've finally got my dosing pumps really dialed in and Zeovit is doing great with nutrients so far as I'm unable to detect any nitrates or phosphates. Still learning the system but it seems to be working though.

Any tricks for pairing up clownfish? They were added together and they sleep nearby one another at night but during the day they don't stay together much and the female can beat the other up. Sometimes they hang out together but only occasionally. I've only seen the shaking thing from the male once or twice.

Have you noticed agression between your two centropyge angels

Pnorris11
06/02/2017, 07:46 PM
They were added together and I haven't yet but time will tell. If they start fighting I'll end up trading one in for a different fish.

I liked the idea of dwarf angels because they are nice fish and your options with this tank are pretty limited i.e. no surgeonfish etc.

Any recommendations/ advice for someone just starting up a Nuvo 40?

Pnorris11
06/22/2017, 07:45 AM
Yeah, there is a long owners thread on the Nuvo than can help but it's quite long. I would definitely do the Tunze Skimmer instead of the Ghost. I actually own both and there is no comparison.

I would also use an IM reactor for biopellets or zeovit because it can be tough to control nutrients in the small setup. What sort of livestock are you planning?

I've seen the thread and it's quite long but there seems to be a lot of good information. It's just a matter of finding it. As far as live stock. I'm looking to get a clownfish, flame angelfish, purple fire fish and a mandarin later on once the tank has matured. As well as some beginner corals

Nice setup!
What are those powerheads your using? It looks like the cords are on the outside?
Is it similar to my Intex pool light where magnets hold the two halves together and powers through the side?
I have a jabeo wavemaker and I can't for the life of me get the suction cut to hold it to the inside wall. I did pick up the whole setup used and am just plain sick of in tank suction cups!

How do you pump the Zeovit media in the IM reactor? I read that the media has to be pumped and not just tumbled. How long have you been using it?

Pnorris11
08/02/2017, 12:47 PM
The IM reactor has a removable compartment that makes it very easy to remove and shake-agitate the mulm off the stones.

The tank has been setup for roughly six months now and I'm starting to get some really great growth with my SPS the last couple months.

Thanks! I was thinking of making my own, but now I might just get the IM reactor. My tank is on day 16th of zeovit. Still haven't put any livestock in. I want to quarantine everything first, so it will still be a while before getting my first coral in. But I am excited to see the results.

I love writing IM 40, hahaha, anyways I too have an IM 40 and currently have two clown fish. Im thinking about getting a yellow wrasse and a midas blenny and maybe a shrimp.

I have a question for you other IM owners though. Is it normal to get algae in the sump? My light is a kessil and it shines into the sump as well as the tank and the tank gets no algae probably due to my CUC, but I noticed the sump has algae in all four chambers hanging on the sides a bit, not bad but it is there ...
