I am trying to determine whether my skimmer is too big for my system. I have Reef Octopus SRO 5000SSS. For the past 18 months, I am unable to get the skimmer to skim consistently. It is cleaned and maintained well. It is rated for up to 500g. My total water volume is 350g approx.

My stocking:

1x Naso 5-6"
1x Blue Hipp 4"
3x Yellows 4"
1x Foxface 6"
3x Flasher wrasses 3"
2x Fairy Wrasses 4-5"
2x Clowns 2"
1x Gramma 4"
1x Dottyback 3"
2x Gobbies 3"
1x Beleny 3"
13x Alleni Damsels 1 1/2"
4x shrimps
3x conchs
Some snails

I feed twice a day. One meal frozen and the second dry food. 4X4 sheet of Nori every other day.

So, heavy, medium, or light bio-load?

This sounds medium to me. Is the main display 350 or is the entire system 350

Light to medium. These are your main producers:
1x Naso 5-6"
1x Blue Hipp 4"
3x Yellows 4"
1x Foxface 6"

Anyone else have an opinion?

I always judge bio-load based on amounts fed. For example, I feed 6-8 cube equivalents daily, to a similar sized system, so that's heavy to me. Some folks feed a cube or two every other day, so that's light. You don't say how much you feed (other than the nori), but assuming 3-4 cube equivalents daily, and your system size, seems like medium to me.

As the earlier post notes, the tangs are going to be the biggest eaters and biggest poopers.

The food quantity I feed depends on the type of food, but the ballpark is 2 cubes of frozen meaty food, and the second meal is flakes and pellet food. It is usually consumed within a minute.

Yes, I understand my herbivore are the biggest producer. They always ruin the scenery with their constant dust cropping....;)

What is your next move? Acquire more fish or get a new skimmer?

I am happy with current stocking level. I may add couple of smaller fishes in the future, but nothing more than that.

I am seriously considering a new smaller skimmer,
