It is with sadness that yesterday evening my good friend Albert Thiel ( famous professional aquarists and writer of many books on the hobby) passed away I believe in the afternoon sometime. So sad am gutted for him and his family, wife Sarah and daughter Sharon. We chatted often via email, on nano reefs and a couple of times on the phone. I met him a few times years ago here in the UK before we became friends the last time we chatted on the phone was a few months ago. Albert has been very poorly and lost his fight to cancer and will be sadly missed by many and the hobby has lost a great pioneer and all around helpful guy to all. RIP my friend.

Oh wow. I grew up reading his books. So sad. We lost a pioneer in the hobby. It's because of the effort of people like him that we've been able to enjoy the hobby that we have today. For those unfamiliar with him here's a relatively recent video of him with Thomas Brown at Thomas Vision Reef: https://youtu.be/JmWgTBEXgsE

Very sad. Sincere condolences to his family and friends. He inspired many people. Everyone who knew him spoke so highly of him. He was loved and admired.

What a shame, condolences to his friends and family indeed. I met Albert in 1987 (or thereabouts) setting up one of the first Dupla tanks in the US at Reef Encounter in NJ. I had read the Optimum Aquarium FW book (that he had translated from the German - still have the copy) a few months prior and spent a small fortune at the time on a trickle filter, DuplaSun LI lights, gravel heating cables, etc. to setup a planted tank. Soon thereafter moved on the SW and reefs. I have always said that my conversations with Albert in those early years set the life course for my interest in reef tanks. One of the true pioneers. Thanks Albert!

I had the pleasure of spending a couple of hours with Albert a few years ago. He was truly a gentleman and eager to share his wealth of knowledge with the members of our club.

May you Rest in Peace.

A true pioneer in the Reefing world.
I still remember buying a Thiel oxygen exchange reactor full of bio balls.
RIP
