View Full Version : Favia puffy?

I posted in the LPS forum but didn't get an feedback - hoping someone is familiar with this:

My favia has been growing very well and has completely covered the rock it's on. It's now basically "trapped".

The middle section is getting puffy and wrinkled as I think it's trying to grow but has no place to go.

My uninformed opinion based on snorkeling is that the natural shape for a large favia rock is a sphere. I think my favia is at that point to start growing into that shape and is therefore puffing out all the sunken in sections so that it can build the coral base under those regions and eventually access light from there too... becoming a ball...

What's the question?

Why is it puffy and congested like that in the middle? The polyp "eyes" are completely covered with the "wall" flesh.

Polyps deposit CaCO3 to the base as they grow. Polyps in the center are older and therefore deposited more calcium carbonate over time, hence it looks like it is puffed in the center.

Sounds ok for a guess...:lolspin:

No... if you watch the video, you'll see what I mean. The middle section is sunken in as a whole but the individual polyps are smashed together and puffed up so much that the center is completely obscured.

I would say, your coral is happy and refrain from speculation.

Yep, an educated guess :D

Yep, an educated guess :D

I would disagree. I have seen many favias and brains grow into large basketball colonies and would not make those assumptions.

Have you seen squished polyps like mine have?

Here's a still shot but you won't see the difference until you watch the video.

It also removes the effect of the particulates floating around

Is it always like that or just sometimes? I would say it's happy and trying to suck in the light.
It appears to only be happening in one particular area.

Yes. Where it's sunken in in the middle. It didn't used to do that when there was room to grow. Also doesn't do it lower down or higher up where the rock it's on is rounded out already.

Does my flake food make my Favia look fat?

I have a Dragons Soul favia going on 2 years now and it is starting to do the same thing. I havent given it any real thought till I came across this thread.

Can everyone see the last video? The polyps are both engorged and swollen.

Well IMO, if they cannot grow outwards no more, they will grow upwards.
