For those that have kept one, and more importantly kept one with other zebrasomas, how would you generally assess aggressiveness (I get that individual temperament will vary) and ability to hold it's own?

My gem is in with puffers and triggers and she does just fine... https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170518/dd75503f345f7b100c1f391d942714a5.jpg

I already have a yellow, purple and desjardini in my 265, but am upgrading to a 400 in the Fall, so trying to assess compatibility (never had a gem before).

I have dory with her and they don't mess with each other... When you do your upgrade introduce them all at same time... Just my two cents... I'm going from a 220 to a 265.. Is your tank custom?

Mine was number 2 zebra to my black tang. Then I added a smaller YT. Gem paid no attention to it. Then I added a similar size 3" PT. First few days there was nothing, now the gem is always chasing the PT around. But my tank is 12' long and 860g so no damage is ever done.
I'd definitely add the gem when you place them all in the 400g. Don't do it until then

Current 265 is a stock marineland. That's about as big as you can get in a mass market tank so, yes, 400 is custom. Gem is smaller than the yellow and purple, so I'll likely keep it in my 120 refugium for a while regardless. 400 isn't untill the Fall anyhow.

IMO, they are the less aggressive ones out of the zebrasomas bunch. When you upgrade I would add all together or put the Gem in first.

I've had 2, currently have one. Both have been fairly mild mannered but would not be pushed around. My current one is in with a chocolate, a polyzona and an Achilles. They are all under 4", and other than an hour or so of squabbling when each new one was added, there hasn't been much aggression at all. The gem was the first in and is the largest by a bit.

My other one was in with a chocolate, a powder blue, a tomini and a desjardini. They all got along.

Thanks, that's very useful. Your polyzona and Achilles coexist? How big of a tank? I have a polyzona also and have been most reluctant to put it in with my Achilles.

The tank is 340g. They Achilles was last in and is only slightly larger than the polyzona. But the polyzona is beefy and doesn't back down from a tail wagging.

They act like every other Zebrasoma tang - meet their needs with some safe quarters, lots of food in variety and low stress and they are great tank mates. Deprive them of hiding places (the "caves" that people make in their aquascape are for us, not for fish who would prefer that people just stack rock so that they can wriggle out of sight), feed them too little (nor just nori) or cram the tank and they will be complete a-holes and/or get sick.

IME, they are yellow or purple tangs with a different costume.

They can also eat coral as they get bigger, like the other Zebrasoma. The one that I had was a gift from a long-time owner who had to get rid of it all of a sudden because it started to eat his acans (back when acans were all the rage). The big issue with this is that they are expensive and folks feel more attached to them whereas they can let a $40 yellow or $200 purple go easier. I gave it away to a 10K display in a hospital when I moved to Colorado - it is still in there today AFAIK. I could not lie and say that it was reef safe to try and sell it.

My Achilles is quite a bit larger than polyzona and the most aggressive of my tangs. I think I'll leave the zebra where it is.

All my tangs are kept very well fed - reduces aggression and the temptation to nibble at the corals.

Gem is about 3" and swimming happily (I think) in my 30L coral QT, which isn't really a coral QT anymore as it's infested with majanos

?

NY Aquatics has some currently for $1,100. Must be more supply because prices have come down a lot.
