Also, any ideas as to why it only opens this much. I got it from a frag swap Saturday. It didn't open much more than this at the swap either, but I figured it was because it was at a swap with lots of people walking by, lighting etc. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170524/8458f46f0d6438b946d41e4b378695cc.jpg

That is a Tahitian Maxima.

These are very difficult clams. Even the best hobbyists struggle with them and are lucky to have a 25% success rate. They can look good for months and then die in 48 hours and are the ultimate in false positive. The only positive positive that you can have is if it puts on new shell growth - if it does, it will do it 1/4 to 1/2 at a time and this is a VERY good sign.

Give it lots of light - 2" under the water directly under a 250 or 400W MH at 750 PAR is not too much. You are in luck that you can put it under a Radium.

Good luck.

the tahitian maxima can do well if you have a right one. if the mantle open about 1.5-2" you will be fine. anything under, most likely you will lose the clam within the next 6 months.
