View Full Version : A little piece of home - Part 2 delivered!

The TBS crew went diving on Sunday and Dan was kind enough to send out the second part of my shipment on Memorial Day. It has only been eight days since Part 1 and I have been at 0 ammonia and under .5 nitrite for about three days prior to ordering. It amazes me that I cycled in five days, although I'll admit that I had helped it by putting a bottle of nitrifying bacteria in the tank about a week prior to ordering Part 1.

I also want to pass along that I only lost pieces of a couple sea squirts and a few sponges from the Part 1 rock. In fact, I had a few tunicates actually showing signs of growth.

Part 2 arrived packaged just as well as Part 1 with 60# of rock, two very nice gorgonians, an assortment of sponges, peppermint shrimp, sea cukes, more hermit crabs than I've ever seen before, and snails. TBS also threw in two decorator crabs, which I very much appreciate - they are very cool little critters. The gorgonians had their polyps extended in a few hours, but unfortunately, I have a lot of gray showing up on the sponges from trying to get them to stay put. I hope they make it, although I have read they are hit and miss. I ordered Sponge Power from BRS to try to keep them fed.

I'm afraid I didn't take the time to document unboxing as I was having a hard time trying to re-aquascape what I thought was a pretty good looking display from the first shipment.

Here are a few pictures of the end result (my apologies on the focus of some of these pics):

Oops - nitrite readings have been at .05, not .5.

SB- you said that U rc'd two 60# shipments of rock, but your tank is hardly filled half way. Is the tank a 90 G and U just ordered less than was recommended?

The correct amount of rock for my 120g according to Richard's list is 240#. They usually ship that in halves. When I first contacted them I let them know I was trying to have more open space in the tank and they suggested I go with the 100g rock package and sent me 100# on the first shipment (I still received the correct amount of live sand for a 120g). On the second shipment I asked them to reduce it even a little bit more so I ended up with a total of 160# of rock and was charged accordingly.

It remains to be seen if I have enough live rock to filter my ultimate bio load, but I didn't want to have just a tank full of rock and no room for the fish to swim and corals to grow out. As of right now it's processing ammonia just fine.

Okay, now the pictures make sense. I recently received part 1 of a 50G package and when it was scaped with caves, etc. the tank is about 1/2 way filled. With the second part, the rock should be within 3-4 inches of the surface, keeping in mind that it will have lots of nooks and crannies for placement of coral and fish to swim.

I'll post some pictures when the second shipment is received.

BTW....your tank looks great!
