I just got a 300g tank and I'm going to do a FOWLR tank. I would like to keep butterfly fishes and a few angels. I've been researching it the fish and what not. I would like some pointers on what butterflies I can keep together. the angels I am going to keep will be a regal and the emperor. Any info or tips would be greatly appreciated!! I've been in the hobby for 6 years and I also have a nice 220 gallon reef tank. I've just never done a FOWLR tank.

Does anyone know of a good place on line to get black worms.

Thinking about using blank sand with this build. Anyone ever have any issues with Hawaiian black sand?

I am also looking to start a fish only tank mostly because I would like to keep butterfly fish and other non-reef safe fish. I have just acquired a 500 gal aquarium that is really set-up for "old school" fish only (wet/dry filter, deep depth, etc.). I am trying to figure out how to make a fish only tank as a more nature habitat look. I also have a bunch of coral skeletons from years ago I hope to use.

I look forward to following you as your build moves forward.

I've heard of black sand becoming magnetic, and sticking to scrapers, thus scratching acrylic/glass.

http://aquaticfoods.com/LiveBlackwormsM.html
This seems to be where people get their blackworms.

I don't know too much about butterflyfish, but your stock list seems to be okay. Make sure you add the Regal Angel as the first fish. If not, it may be bullied to death. Get the Potters in soon as well. Give them a chance to get comfortable and eating and QT ALL OF YOUR FISH. Can't imagine the heartbreak if crypto/velvet got into that tank.

Wow, guess I won't go with the black sand. Picking up the 300g DD tomorrow!! Can't wait! Even though it's going to take a couple of weeks to get everything for the tank. I've been researching the meds for the QT. Thinking of getting a 20g for the QT. Thanks for the advice on adding the Regal and potter 1st, and for the link for the black worms. The regal and the Achilles Tang are my favorite fish. I finally got a 5 inch Achilles for my reef tank about 3 months ago.

I use black sand in one of my tanks and haven't had much of an issue with the magnetic scrapers. However, I make sure not to get it too close to the sand.

I do like the look of the black sand, especially against lighter colored fish.

I believe Meyers, orangeface, and ornate butterflies are all obligate corallivores. Your chance of keeping them alive is slim.

Butterflies are awesome. Some of the online retailer websites show the relative difficulty of each species to give you an idea of what is easy or difficult. Nice SPS tank too. The Husky is beautiful. :)

Most of the corals have been in the tank for at least a month.
The BTA has been in the tank since day one.
Flame angel has been in the tank since Aug 19th.
Pair of Pearlscale Butterfly fish since Aug 25th.

So far,
The Flame has nipped at the Green finger leather coral and the JF radio Active Stylophora. He or she... has left the zoas alone.

The Pearlscales have been picking at the large chalice. The chalice was stung by the branching hammer mother colony in the reef tank and the Pearlscales are picking on the side that was dyeing off.

The chaetodon punctatofasciatus did nip at the big chalice and the red monti.

I haven't seen the Chaetodon Collare eat yet. I've tried frozen PE mysis, brine shrimp, fish frenzy, half shell clams. The pellets I tried were hikari extreme seed weed, Hikari freeze-dried brine, NLS marine fish formula, and ON formula 1 pellets

Also tried a rock with aptasia on it. The chaetodon punctatofasciatus went to town on the aptasia.

Well..... I had someone QT a Moorish Idol for a week. After I got him, he was eating off the algae clip on day 2. I was soooo happy. When I woke up on day 3 he had ich all over him. He died on day 4 and all the butterflies, my clown fish that I had since he was extremely small and the flame angel followed suit. :headwally: I really got attached to the pair of Chaetodon Xanthurus. So devastating!! I went out and got a 33g tank that I'm setting up as a QT tank.

sorry to hear :(
IMHO one week qt is not enough time for a proper quarantine procedure. The average recommended time is min 4 weeks depending on what type of qt you are doing.
qt the remaining fish and keep the DT fishless for a min 72 days and then enjoy adding healthy fish back to your dt after you qt :)

what you can do is take a couple of live rocks out of your display and place them in the qt and that will give it a kick start and allow for instant if not a rapid cycle for the qt.
yeah 72 days is a minimum to make sure that all the ich and most all other parasites are eradicated from the display (except uronema which is a nightmare to deal with). make sure there is no cross contamination from your qt to the display tank and that the qt is at least 10 feet away if not in another room to prevent cross contamination.

Thanks for the advice. Think I値l just drain the 33g QT and fill it with water from the FOWLR tank. And I値l put some live rock from the sump in there.

10 feet? Is that because of possible splashing into the other tanks?

If he is going to be treating the qt with copper, hypo or cp, it shouldn't really matter but should NOT use the display water if doing Tank transfer.

I was going to use water from the FOWLR so I don稚 have to wait for the QT to cycle. I知 going to treat the QT after I put the fish in there. Hopefully I can get the fish out of the FOWLR today so the clock can start for the 72 day waiting period

Sadly, I bet both of your tanks are contaminated.
Don't use the water, filter socks, lr etc in your new qt.
Qt should be bb with some pvc pieces.
The qt period should be min 8-10 weeks.
I would go closer to 80 days.

A bummer, but I would recommend not getting any new fish for a while and getting everything square first, sorry. gl

How would the reef tank be infected? I知 not going to get any new fish until January 1st.

What steps do you recommend while quarantining? I知 still researching the quarantine process.

Since I have a cleaner wrasse that I'm going to QT, I was reading that wrasses don't do well with copper. Should I just do a 3-5 min fresh water dip, then run him in hyposalinity for 4 weeks then do prazi pro?
