Is something eating my sand sifting star?

Not sure if my giant emerald green(s) may be eating him... or if he's disintegrating.

He has a few chunks taken out of him but his top layer looks like it's been sanded off.

Looks like he's just dying, IMO. If they run out of food in the sand bed, they can start to go downhill like that. Water quality is another possibility.

Unfortunately these guys starve to death in home aquaria. The deplete the sand bed of microfauana and run out of food.
