View Full Version : Bristle worm hair reaction?

Hello, all.

Yesterday, a client's biocube return pump failed and I absent-mindedly reached in to grab it. I have always known those return pump chambers to be hot spots for bristle worms, and sure enough, one nailed me.

I immediately pulled out as many of the hairs as possible, but I'm afraid a good amount of them broke off in my skin.

I was initially poked at 3:00pm. There was a slight topical irritation and swelling continued throughout yesterday evening.

Around 4:00am I awoke, and the swelling had gotten significantly worse. I do have sleep apnea, so waking up in the middle of the night is not unusual. The pain by 4;00 was quite severe, enough to cause an elevated blood pressure and heart rate. (139/90 and 90bpm for those of you who are curious.) I began developing a rash (less of a general rash, more like a series of localized hives) on my arm. Eight small pustules, to be exact.

Fast forward to now, 20 hours later. The pain is worsreally yet, but the swelling doesn't appear to have gotten worse. The hives have not spread any further.

I've attached some photos for reference. Have any of you ever had a reaction like this? I haven't been in this much pain from swelling since I had been rear fanged by a hognose a couple years ago. I've tried vinegar, acetaminophen, and hydrocortisone with mild relief.

(Sorry about the bandaid adhesive on my hand. It hurt too bloody bad to scrub off. LOL.)
