For those folks who want to have lunar lights but don't want to change out your existing daytime lights with new lights that have a lunar feature, here is a suggestion.

I bought some name brand lunar lights from a major retailer and they crapped-out in 1 month.

So, I made my own for about $40 for a 150gal aquarium. See below.

I recommend a dimmer, as these little cool white LEDs are quite powerful.

The Astro AI timer has two separate timed switches in one unit. This is pretty unique. Therefore, the lunar lights will always keep the same relationship to the daytime lights. No need for two separate timers going out of sync with each other.

For my tank, the lunar lights are on about 5 hours before the daytime lights turn on, and on again about 2 hours after the daytime lights turn off.

So far, these LEDs have been operating for 6 months with no issues.

Here's the specs...

This one isn't saltwater, but all my fresh water tanks are set up this way and I plan to do the same once my SW is done cycling.

I get 5 meter roll of waterproof sticky back LED strip and an adapter. Costs about $6 if you have the patience to wait for it to be shipped from China. I stick the strip to my existing fixture until I run out. The fixture itself is on a timer and turns on and off. The LEDs stay on 24/7 but are only visible at night.

Try this link. I don't know why it's not showing up as a pic.

I 3d printed clips to cover most of the LEDs and I leave it on 24x7.

Ha. That's exactly how I did it. It sits on the lip on the front of the tank and I have it pointing up into the canopy to disperse the light. It gives it a nice soft blue glow at night. Just enough to see, but not enough to affect any of the animals.

The full light was way too bright, which is why I covered most of the LEDs. Some of the reviews stated that the LEDs tend to burn out over time. I figured I'd just move the clips as that happens.
