Hello everyone! My wife and I are finally moved into our first home together as we just got married 3 months ago. I temporarily down-graded to a Reefer 170 from my 56 Gallon SPS Reef Tank about 7 months ago due to lack of space. While its a great tank, I couldn't wait to upgrade! I'm beyond excited to finally be in the 100+ gallon club. Blows me away at how big the system is as I've only been up to a 75 gallon before. I hope you all enjoy my build progress as much as I do!

System Type: SPS Dominant

Display System:
Display Tank: 48"x24"x24" - Visio Eurobraced 120 Gallon
Display Lighting: ATI 6x54w Sunpower T5HO
Sump: Vivid Custom Sump - 36"x18"x20"

Support System:
Display Flow: Maxspect Gyre-130 + Ecotech Marine Vortech MP40x2
Return Pump: Simplicity 1600 DC Pump
Reactor: Chaeto Reactor
Skimmer: Simplicity 240 DC Protein Skimmer
ATO: Tunze 5017
Doser: BRS 1.1ml Doser x2 (For now. Will be adding new dosing pump.)
Controller: Apex Jr. w/ Energy Bar 4 & 8

Additives:
Alkalinity: Triton Core7
Calcium: Triton Core7
Magnesium: Triton Core7

Planned Water Chemistry: Triton Recommendation
Nitrates: 0-5 ppm
Phosphates: 0.02 ppm
Alkalinity: 7.5-8dKH
Calcium: 410-420 ppm
Salinity: 1.026
Magnesium: 1250-1300 ppm
Potassium: 400 ppm

System Plan:

The system goal is to be as simple as possible. I've used ZEOvit with great success, though I'd like to change it up to a more "natural" approach. I'll be running the Triton Core7 method. Though instead of having a "true" refugium, I'll be using a Chaeto Reactor instead. I'm an Acropora fanatic which is what I'll be mainly adding to the tank. While I do enjoy some of the high-end Acropora, my focus will be more on color instead of names. Granted, that doesn't mean no fancy named Unicorn Fart Acroporas . I'll also add various Zoanthids over-time to add some color near the bottom of the tank. As for fish, I'll be adding my current live stock which includes: 2x Black Onyx Clownfish, 1x Melanurus Wrasse, 1x Yellow Watchman Goby (Recently went female and ugly, but I still love it.) I've had these fish for the past 4 years, aside from the Wrasse who is a month or two old in my Reefer 170. I plan on adding other fish as well such as: Various Wrasse's, Various Anthias (Especially a Sunburst Anthias), and a Tang or two.

The right aquascape is representing my current aquascape, which I'll be adding to the tank once its cycled.

And my current Reefer 170. Note the picture was taken 2 months ago.

Nice build mate.
Any reason why you didn't go 8 x 54 watts T5 unit?

Found it used. Though of course, just 2 weeks later a local friend posted his 8x54 for sale.... :headwally:

New wife, home, and tank. Congratulations on all three! Man,when you do a new build, you go all out! LOL.
Will be following along the with the new tank part.

May all three bring you a life of great satisfaction.

Thanks so much guys!

@kevlow I appreciate the kind words! And yes, have to go all out! Granted I don't have an insane system like some other people on here which I drool over. But I grab what I can get! Often used deals are key for my higher-end equipment!

@shih87 thanks for following! Hopefully my tank is as nice as yours, cFloor's, and many of you other legends on here!

@cFloor thank you brotha. I bought a Chaeto Reactor from my LFS. Happen to be the wrong size for his client so I swooped it up. I believe it's by Sea Side Aquatics. I'll get some pictures up tonight of it.

Congrats on your new build, marriage, and home. I really like looks of your stand and canopy. Can I ask which side of LV you're in? My daughter lived there for several years, the last couple of years were in NLV, before she came home to help me.

NLV has definitely changed. It's gone a bit down hill, however some parts have made a comeback. Not terrible part of town to live in! But I love the Northwest too much to move away from the area.

The NW was where she lived when she first moved back to LV, years ago. She had a wonderful view of the mountain from her apartment there. She loved the camping up there during the summer, and tubing during the ski season. I visited the city twice during her earlier years living there. For me it was nice to visit, but I'm a product, and devotee of the deep south. I still hope to visit there again, we have good friends there.

Today is the day! LFS will be here in about an hour with 140ish gallons of saltwater using Fritz salt. I'll also be adding Fritz Turbo Start 900 to the system to give the bacteria a jump-start. Plan on letting it run for a few weeks before adding anything though.

@Ucantwin I don't think so. I'll lightly feed the tank while I'm feeding my other tank. Just so they have something to feed on.

Tank Ian up and running with water!
Dumped in the Turbo Start last night and also put a little bit of ZEObac along with Sponge Power just cause.

Tank has a light leak I need to fix. Very minor but I'd like to fix it asap before organizing all my cords and what not. It's coming from the drain bulkhead.

Was going to hold off for a few weeks on the other MP40 since I didn't NEED it right now. But wife surprised me today with an MP40 for my birthday! I guess I'll keep her around :D

My Reefer 170 was hit quite hard with AEFW... Again... They keep coming from somewhere in the tank and I can't figure out where. I haven't added anything in quite some time now. I went ahead and dipped EVERYTHING the other night and decided I won't be using this rock in the new tank. I don't want to have 2 tanks running too much longer so I went ahead and bought more rock.

Drill died as I went to drill the rocks together, so I just added them in the tank. Ended up making a decent little scape on accident. Seems like It'll be plenty of room for Acropora and maybe a nice Monti on the far right to let it take up that area, but undecided on the Monti.
What do you guys think of the aquascape? Should I leave it or change it on the right side?

I also am undecided now on using Triton.. I may just keep it even more simple with dosing + Weekly/Bi-Weekly water changes.

Other than that, tank is definitely on its way to being finished! Added the Fritz Turbo Start, some ZEObac, and some Sponge Power. Really let the bacteria set in!

The original rocks are getting the ugly brown algae and film algae is appearing on the glass. Going to give it another week or two before adding a fish or two. I think I'll add some snails and crabs tomorrow.

Thank you, sir. Nothing in particular.. the closer I get for my tank being ready, the more I think just my chaeto reactor, 2-part, and weekly 10% water changes would be plentiful.

Thanks Matt! I was going for irregular. As nice as a perfect flowing aquascape looks, I believe it's the irregular look that really adds a lot of character and "depth" to the tank when it fills with corals.

Tested all of my water and everything came out the same aside from a .2 dKH in Alkalinity. So I added three corals to start with.

It's crazy that these seemed like colonies in my Reefer 170 and minuature colonies in my 120.

Got the urge late last night to transfer my Apex over to the 120. Was tired of having the tank run off of a power-strip with no timers. Figured it was finally time to get my 120 in control since I no longer had any corals in the Reefer 170.

Everything is doing really well so far, minus the Fox Flame. It wasn't doing so hot in the Reefer 170 so I didn't expect it to survive anyways.
Fish are absolutely in love. My Wrasse is swimming through the rocks and racing across the tank. It's a really great sight to see. I can't wait to add more fish to the system as well.

For now, here is what we have:

Lmfao yes it is. But yet we all still some how find more room :P.

I think so, yes. I just bought a bottle each of Alk and Calcium from Fritz. I use their salt with good success so figured I might as well add their product. Still torn on the Triton method. Letting a few local reefers get their tanks dialed in before switching over, if I do.

Picked up 6 new corals today. Fellow reefer has some nice stuff that he's selling. Stressed and browned out from dipping and battling AEFW, but you can see the total potential.

Here's just a few top downs of the new Acropora that have some color. Unedited and the blue's are insane on the two corals.

Hooked up my Chaeto Reactor tonight, just need to get some chaeto for it!
Everything is doing well. Added a fat and healthy looking Yellow Tang today from my LFS. Keep forgetting that I can NOW add bigger and more exciting fish and am not limited to a small size anymore with my Reefer 170.

Here are some pictures from tonight of the tank and sump. Please note the wire mess will be cleaned up sometime this next month! :P

Thanks guys! Can't wait until this bad boy is filled up. Everything is solid so far parameter wise. Caught some AEFW on my large Scripps acro so I ended up tossing the bitten chunk. Have a small chunk I'm going to dip tomorrow along with some others just to be safe.

Noticing some great color already on other Acropora. Polyp extension is great on everything. I'm sure all my acros are happy to be lit from all sides opposed to an LED.

Looking nice! What zeo products are those? Are you using them?

Thanks!
Currently just left overs. ZEOstart that has spit left (using .14ml just to use the rest of it and feed some bacteria). I have Pohls Xtra, full bottle leftover, basically that I've added once so far last night. I also have Coral Snow which I've been daily dosing at night. Then I have Sponge Power and ZEOfood which are 3/4 full. I've been dosing Sponge Power to get my Sponge population healthy. I'm sure the SPS don't mind it either.

My LFS broke down a tank and the guy had a bunch of ZEOvit bottles that were 3/4+ full. So I acquired some blue bottles that I'll very likely use for coloration and what not at a conservative rate.

Got a few more top down pics today along with an FTS during a water change. Really hard to get a really high quality picture with the T5 bulbs blasting above my viewer. I can hardly see my phone screen when taking these, but its the best I can do at the moment!

Ended up buying a Fuijifilm XP120 tonight at BestBuy. Figured since we're going on our honeymoon tomorrow with snorkeling included, a water proof camera would be fun. So of course, what does any reefer do? Tests it out on their tank! Sketchy to put the camera in water, I eagerly did so. I need to work on my skills a little bit, but a much more "accurate" shot than what I was able to get above with my iPhone 6+. Might not be the most crisp camera, but definitely am able to get a better colored shot, naturally.

Honeymoon was freaking awesome! First stop was Catalina Island in California. They had snorkeling and of course we signed up for it. Prior to that, we kayaked around the boats and what not which was pretty cool. Got to play with the camera bit which was great out of water and not so much underneath us... However when we went snorkeling, it turned out pretty high quality. Much better than we both anticipated. The wife was pretty panicky when she realized there were easily 150+ fish swimming around us. I was simply like a kid in a candy store, mesmerized by the beautiful Bass and Garibaldi and the ONE Wrasse I got to see.

Home now and still playing with my camera. I'm a little under the weather as I feel I'm still on the boat and get randomly dizzy... But the tank for some reason was helping me. So I got some pics last night, trying various things to get the best quality.

Here's one to start, the Pearlberry of course. Seems to be the easiest for my to capture. Tried it with a flash which surprisingly helped the quality. Though had to edit the white balance a little bit in Adobe Lightroom to be able to get the accurate color.
http://i.imgur.com/FxjvQA7.jpg?1

Here is the Pink Lemonade I have. I also found that if I record a video at 1080p 60FPS, it really gets nice close-ups of the corals. Using this method, I just took a screen shot of the video. May have reduced quality some, but not too much.
http://i.imgur.com/Zg5MJNO.jpg?1

And the other I got a nice shot of, the Area 51 from Dynasty Corals. This was an unnamed piece until a fellow reefer and I picked it up at a local Swap. Dynasty Corals later made a post for people to come up with names, in which Area 51 won.

Just a quick shot I snapped tonight.
I did a 10 gallon water change earlier today.
I also moved my Gyre 130 from the back right corner in a vertical position to above the MP40 on the right in a horizontal position as high as it will go. This is creating much mroe surface agitation as prior. Not sure if that helped my pH or what, but it went from averaging 8.1 to 8.3 and is now 8.1 at night. Nothing crazy though I do notice better polyp extension with higher pH.

Ohh yeah, I can definitely see how that will easily keep your pH stable! My downstairs is a bit small. So I definitely see a difference when my wife and 4 dogs are in there opposed to just me. Though still too hot here in Vegas to open windows and allow fresh air rolling through the house. Soon though!

Coraline seems to slowly be growing on the live rocks. It's the Coraline it had on originally, very mature looking. I'm okay with it not growing too much and my Acropora out competing it though. Looks great for a little while, but quickly takes over! Lol.

I also need to get my doser up. Noticing some great growth on my corals and I think daily 2-Part will be required soon.

Got some pics of some Acropora! Everything is doing so well still. Had to lower the photoperiod of my Chaeto Reactor as it was taking up too many nutrients and corals paled out a little. Biggest notice was my Strawberry Shortcake which came back within a week with very vibrant colors. I've never been able to keep one for long, but this fella is looking very healthy... @reefmutt, you must have jinxed my Coraline or perhaps saw some I was completely unaware of! My tank is exploding in Coraline algae. First started with my MP40's (from what I saw), then my overflow/back wall. Today I noticed nice clumps of it growing on the rocks lol.

Tank is doing good, been busy with other stuff. Trying to remind myself to feed the fish everyday and monitor Alkalinity at its best lol.
I'm not being lazy, but trying to not do any water changes and seeing how my corals react as I was doing 10% weekly.. Nothing insane, just enough to clean the sand.

Where are you keeping your params now and are you still dosing coral snow? If so, why are you doing that?

I had some local reefers say they love it for the water clarity the next day after dosing and their skimmer and filter socks seem to pull more once they started dosing

Parameters are:
Salinity: 1.026
Calcium: 420
Alkalinity: 7.5-8
Magnesium: 1350
Nitrates/Phosphates: ?? Not sure, haven't measured in a while.

I've used Coral Snow for quite some time now and I do really enjoy it. However I haven't used it in the past month or so, felt no need for it. Tank has been completely clear for a while now.

Picked up some goodies from my favorite LFS here in town. They had a buy one, get one deal.... Why would I pass that up?!

Not sure what this is, but gosh dang I couldn't keep my eyes off of it since it came in a few weeks ago. Was a larger colony but the shop couldn't sell it so they cut it in a few chunky frags.

This is a random Tenuis. Looks like it has some potential nice colors in the mix. Noticing slight purple tips in there, excited to see how this one cooks up.

Picked myself up a LumiLite Actinic Blue LED bar today. Blown away at the colors under the LED when its on by itself.. Didn't know these colors existed in my tank!

Working on getting a little tripod for my camera that will work IN my tank. Until then, you'll get fuzzy-ish pics because I can't keep still enough for a high quality shot :P

This is my Walt Disney frag. Been trying to get it to color up nicely, and it is... Slowly.. Though under the Blue LED's its a freaking beaut!! This was taken with the Orange Filter in front of my lens.

I've been MIA for a little while, sorry for that! Work and everything else has been busy. My tank is just running itself with little water changes. I even let my Alk get a little too low and corals looked pretty pale from that and the intense lighting.
Finally got my tank on a stable dosing schedule. Just had to up it this morning as I don't think my 20ml Alk/Cal per day is keeping up.
Went to a local frag swap here in town that was located at the ATM shop where "Tanked" is filmed. Really cool to see it there! Picked up some sexy new pieces including one I've always wanted, an Orange Passion Acropora!! Also got two frags from a shipment that Reef Raft also gets, also a classic PC Rainbow mini colony. And I got a very nice and chunky Red Planet as you can see it glowing on the far right of my FTS below.

My parents also surprised me with the new iPhone X... Wow does it take some nice shots! In fact, much much better than my 6+ or even my Fuijifilm XP120 for FTS's!!
So down below is a much updated FTS with only Blue LED's on and an orange filter in front of the lens!
