I purchased one of the xf250s for my 150g cube (36"x36"x30") with the concern that it may be a little too powerful for a 3' tank. Needless to say, I have keep the flow rate at 10-20% because any higher then that I get a sand storm in the tank.

Here is where I could use some assistance. I am now wanting to purchase another gyre so I can use the anti synchronized mode to change the flow pattern in my tank. Which option would you recommend;

1. Buying a second xf250 pump to run with my current one knowing that I would have to stay at 10-20% flow rate.
2. Bite the bullet and switch out to two of the xf230 pumps which will give me more flow rates to play with above 20%.
3. Switch to something else.

Switching to two xf230s may give me more flow rates but it is also the more expense option and the reviews of the xf230s don't deem to be as good as the xf250 reviews which is why I would like to get opinions from others that have tried these gyres.

I came across this on BRS. I am considering my options for a new build so I hope this is helpful.

I would stick with the xf250s just because I don't see a lot of value in swapping to the xf230s, and I'd want to spend the money on other things.

If it were me, I would just stick with the 250s. IMO, the only difference is you'll probably run the 230s a little higher to have the same effect as the 250s running lower, so I don't think you'll gain anything. The controllers for the 230, 250, and 280 are also unique to those pumps so you would need to buy a 230 controller in addition to the two pumps if you were to go that route.

I own the 250, have it over a 57 gal at 20%. Plan on getting a second one for my 150 gal, just like you. Think about your question, if you achieve lots of flow with a larger gyre, running at only 20%, why would you switch it to two smaller ones, running them at higher intensity to achieve similar flow? The 250 also has wider blade of water than the 230, and running lower intensities means the pump will prob run quieter too.

Im also running two MP40's on the back glass, but IMO the gyre allows perfect flow, which doesnt hit the corals directly and moves water throughout the whole tank.

Thanks for the input. Seems like a simple choice when you hear it from someone else.:headwally:

We tend to upgrade sooner or later in this hobby so I'd go with another 250. But if you know you are not going to get another tank any time soon I'd suggest a pair of 230s. The 250s are going to be so strong that you are stuck with just 10%. The smaller pumps will allow you to play with the surge mode and other patterns. I have two 250s in my 5 ft and I can not go higher than 30%.

If you want to sell the 250 PM me. I am on the fence for the same reasons as you.
