View Full Version : Swallowtail Angelfish in 75 Gallon reef?

Hi, just wondering if a swallowtail angelfish could have a healthy life in a 4' long 75 gallon reef aquarium? I read from some sites that they need a minimum tank size of 75-125 Gallons to thrive. So a little confused as to whether it would work.

The reason I'm not asking about a dworf angelfish like a coral beauty (which I would actually prefer) is because the swallow tail seems to be reef safe.

I have a pair of Ocellaris clownfish, a Melanurus wrasse and a Firefish at the moment.

G. semifasciatus? Should be a planktivore and quite reef safe. About 8" max as an adult. I would say it would probably be ok in a 75, but certainly not any smaller tank than that, and I wouldn't do multiples.

Just looking at prices and see it's about $250+ USD so about $5000 CAN, LOL.

Only males should cost that much, females are cheaper. Males don't always keep their color without a female or two around, so I think it's better to just get a female.

Did you consider the Watanabe and Bellus Angels? They are very similar, stay a little smaller and can be cheaper sometimes.

Just looked and it was a female :( but maybe it costs more because it's masked?

I like the Watanabe, but live aquaria says it's difficult. The Bellus angel is definitely an option for sure!

There's an LFS in Montreal selling 2 pairs of those angels. Really pretty.

I wouldn't recommend them for a 75 gallon though personally, individual or pair. I tried the Japanese Swallowtail and a Watanabei (separate times) years ago. Neither lasted long. You can tell just by looking at them that they weren't happy to be confined to a small tank. As large planktivores, they need space to swim.
