View Full Version : Need to disassemble a glass tank

So, after 20 years or so the cheap glass tank I used for a DIY sump has started to leak. When I set it up I put it under the stand through the back but it's too big to get out through the front doors of the stand. Any thoughts on how to pop off the plastic rim and split the seams to get the glass out in largeish pieces? I'm not trying to save it, I just want to get it out without having to smash it to bits with a hammer.

Brake it then clean it up. The best I can think of. Maybe razor the silicone off.

You can pull a razor/utility knife down the silicone seams to cut them. It takes a little effort to make sure you're cutting the entire seam, and to cut it the entire length, but then each panel can be taken out separately.

Yo stop, It's hammer time!

Having cut apart many tanks, I can tell you that it'll be less work to clean up some smashed glass versus cutting the whole thing apart.

Wear thick leather gloves when you are pulling the panels apart after you razor blade them.
