View Full Version : Should I put anything under my sump to lessen vibration noise?

Hi RC. I just bought a new sump. My old sump came with some styrofoam glued underneath it. Does home depot or other places sell styrofoam? I have heard of people using yoga mats. What do you guys use? The sump is only 24x15 inches.

Thanks

Styrofoam is usually stiff, so a rubberized yoga mat might be better at dampening sounds.

We used a rubber mat that is fairly dense and built a lip into the stand for the sump, shaping the mat to collect any excess water and direct it to the basement's sump crock, not that we've actually needed it.

Mousepad worked very well for me. Yoga mat sounds like it work well too.

I've used yoga mats and they work quite well. Also consider putting your sump inside a 'drip tray' that is made to just fit inside the stand. That way splashes, drips and heaven forbid, leaks get caught before the get to the wood of the stand or the floor. Check out my build thread and you can see how I even added a drain to the outside in case of a major leak.

On my recent build I put rubber mat under the sump, then a piece of 1/2" plywood, then another mat for double insulation. The first foot of the return plumbing is soft silicone hose. The return and skimmer pumps are both sitting on typical suction cup mounts. It's very quiet in terms of pump noise.

BRS; showed a few great kitchen items that work great for aquarium owners, one was a rubber sink mat, they showed one could wrap thier pump this mat. Its available at most stores.

I use a yoga mat between my tank and the cabinet and the sump and the cabinet floor. I also have a Nyos skimmer and Ecotech return and QD pumps. I wanted the quietest as possible tank I could get.
