Im planning on building a new stand for my 40 breeder and would also like to put a small QT tank next to it. my question is, should i put a few vertical 2 x 4's in the center to hold the weight along with the horizontal ones? Thanks.

Yes, this will help distribute the load. I would say look at my build, but I missed getting a picture with out the panel on. There are a lot of good photos of stands on here and even via google.

You can do it if you want, but it's not necessary. Mid-span support isn't needed except on longer, much larger tanks. Here's the stand I built for my 110g tall (4ft x 1.5 ft.) I have a middle trim piece in the front held in by magnets, but it provides no vertical support and the back is completely open.

I am just finishing this up. Completed the sump this morning. The doors will fit flush like a European cabinet. It is entirely built of 3/4" birch plywood.

Looking good JTL. Just from looking at your tank, I think the overloaded 2x4's I plan to use will be plenty strong since my tank isn't big. Thanks for the input guys.

Thanks, the back is well supported by the 3/4 plywood, the corners have an additional piece of 3/4' and the front span is 3 pieces of 3/4 glued and screwed.

Wanted to share my build. It's a 2*4 construction with a 3/4 ply on top one middle support in back. Lined inside with white plastic panel for easy cleaning. A drawer on top for storage. And covered in pallet wood.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170711/3369f2e32432eb97b8a4ab7b95c7061e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170711/b46d2783cf6093cd98cb05e8bb4f2214.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170711/72505967c85256bb261644db13b56532.jpg

That's pretty sweet looking. I will be adding some vertical /horizontal supports because I will have the larger tank off to the side and next to my smaller QT tank. A bit worried and don't want it to collapse in for some reason. i like the look of the staggered wood . Nice job
