In the long run they are the same . However, acetic acid/vinegar causes a precipitous drop when you initially dose it.; so it needs to be dosed slowly. Vodka/ ethanol can be bolus dosed without a precipitous drop .

I tried dosing manually a day's worth of vinegar in my tank (50ml into a 65g tank, and it dropped my pH by 0.5 points. I think I may try switching over to vodka to get a slower change.

Remember 80 proof vodka is 40% ethanol( carbon source) and 60% water, while 5% acetic acid vinegar is only 5% acetic acid( carbon source ) and 95% water. So, you only need about 1/8th the amount of 80 proof vodka vs vinegar to get an approximately equal amount of carbon.
