I have used Salifert kits for years. Depending on the age of your system and what you are keeping your needs for test kits can vary.

For a new system, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, and Phosphate. Once your tank is established, your needs will change. If you are planning on soft corals only, Nitrates and Phosphates will remain important. If you are going for stony corals, you will need to keep an eye on Calcium, Alkalinity, and Magnesium.

I use Calcium and Alkalinity about weekly, Magnesium if either of those seem out of whack. Beyond that, I don't test for anything unless something looks out of sorts.
