Been a longtime user of these heaters, yet the two I bought recently both have a HUGE on/off range - 73 to about 85. Anyone with a similar experience?

They turn on at 73 and don't turn off until 85? That's not right, they typically only swing 1-2 degrees.

Yeah, it's weird.

That doesn't seem right at all. I'd bin it if not being used with a controller of sorts...

Yeah, it's weird.

Did you let it sit in the water for a few hours first? Since they use a mechanical switch if they go from say an 80° room to 70° water it can take them a while to acclimate. Otherwise it sounds like the set point is not being registered and the heater is going across it's entire range - In which case they're bad.

The one I use in my QT tank seems to run a little high before shutting off (Despite re-calibrating it), but not like what you're experiencing.

I picked up a new set a little over a month ago, they have been right I the money since day 1. I'd contact support for help n possibly exchange.

I would always use a heater with a ranco and also apex as double fail

Dang, could be a bad batch. I'd alert them.

Just seems odd that it happened with both of the ones I recently bought. Am going to use an inkbird controller regardless, but was curious to see if anyone else had a similar experience.

Are you testing them in a bucket? I always get wacky readings when I try that, I think they have some kind of minimum on time. Make sure you are testing it in a larger volume of water that is well circulated. Maybe a QT tank that doesn't have anything in it at the moment?

These are on a pair of nanos in my sons rooms and I've not worked out an easy way to get my apex up there.

Even if using a temp controller you would lose any backup from the internal thermostat since you would have to crank them up to get them to come on.
