View Full Version : What would you add to a 55?

What would you add to a 55 gallon with the following in it: a pair of clownfish, a pair of banggai cardinalfish, and maybe(?) a hi fin watchman goby? Preferably coral safe (Galaxia, kenya tree, GSP, and mushroom anemones), and wouldn't go too hard against the cleanup crew (Snails and hermits...I think). I think the tank could do with a few more additions (2 max), and I'm looking for dynamic fish that aren't "boring" or "ugly" (my dad's words, not mine). Oh...and if possible, I like to buy in pairs/trios...

Golden Midas bleeny from Africa, or a Mimic Bleeny from the Red Sea

Wait. The venomous Mimic Blenny? Those sound fun! Can you keep either of the fish in pairs?

Flasher wrasses- you can keep multiple males or a male and a couple of females. I have three male McCosckers in my 55, and each one has his own territory.

zebra dartfish (trio)
chalk bass

A flame angel, azure damsels, and a couple of flashing wrasses--it would be a very colorful, active tank.

Toby puffers are really cool, but are hit/miss with picking at coral, but could also end up eating a lot of snails. I tried one before and he was great, but didn't last long because it turned out he was sick when I got him.

I also used to have a one spot foxface that could do well. They are full of personality, and change color at night or when they are scared. They are also very peaceful, even though they are venomous.

I currently have 13 fish in my 55gal, even tho it doesn't look it. I have only lost one fish in 2 yrs. Jumped out.
A yellow tang, 3 chromis, 3 pajama cards, 2 yellow tail damsels, 2 other damsels, a matted filefish and a gold stripe maroon clown.

Get the fish that are most attractive to you, but bear in mind compatability.

I just added the 3 pajama cards and dont have a pic of the tank with them in it yet.
Hard to go wrong with chromis..they are constantly active.

Wait....so I can add a yellow tang/one spot foxface? All the lit I've been reading is all "No tang in a tank less than 75".

Corals in the tank are just really cheap things: mushroom anemones, galaxia, a kenya tree and GSP. I might add a few more frags later on though.

Why not some bottom fish. The goby, a scooter blenny and a shrimp for him

I would not add a tang or rabbitfish.

How about a melanurus wrasse?

Ooh...I like scooter blennies...but if I have enough room for a scooter blenny...does this mean I have enough room for a mandarin dragonet?

And before anybody says anything...I don't know if I have enough live food in the tank to sustain one...

Yes. I plan on adding one to my 55 with a sump, but I STRONGLY believe in the 6 month rule. Otherwise someone (I want to say it was a Paul) came up with a diy feeder that seems to be amazing

The tank's been setup for ...2.5 years now? There's about 40 lbs of live rock in it, but there's no refugium sump...just a sump to hold life support.

Midas blenny, great fish, a lot of personality. I had a 55 gallon 15 years ago with a Midas Blenny, it was everyone's favorite fish. FYI, a 55 is not any easy footprint for a reef, definitely stay away from Tangs and all Rabbit fish.

I've got a coral beauty, maroon clown, bicolor dottyback, and 4 damsels in my 55, no problems.

Yea, I know my case is not typical, very fortunate I suppose.
