I'm starting a new Journal as Photobucket has destroyed my old one. At least this one doesn't have to suffer through three years of an agonizingly slow build.

Here are some current pictures of where my reef is as of today. Several fish but no coral in the DT as of yet. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170809/5e3456155c5bcec2d269910009421e2e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170809/ecdaedea0ceb2237cfd01a24f50efc5e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170809/8c6f1ea588ffeca4d5956670d864c11b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170809/5f2de28da3c1c42165efd812e71cc364.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170809/85bb309af65bfdaa3de05a2422d0ba5f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170809/6aed222dda8495a8a829c4c017a46911.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170809/2fd4e229872e4013544068a293168abb.jpg

Here are some pictures of my frag tank in the basement. I'm down here staring into my frag tank trying to figure out the first one to go in... Should it be my oldest coral? Should it be the ones I want in the prime spots? Should I start at the back of the DT and work my way forward? So many questions. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170809/3dedbcf96f4632c2cc26d06aa7173378.jpg

Hahaha yeah that is tough. I can just say from my experience and moving, starting with new rock that I wish I had a thriving frag tank like you to leave my colonies and good frags in while putting the cheap stuff in the DT to see how it does. This move has been so rough to my tank but it is finally starting to come back (knock on wood), I go on vacation tomorrow so we will see how it is when I get back.

Thats what I would do, put the cheaper stuff in for a couple weeks or a month and see how it does. Just make sure you have them on frag plugs you can move for your nice pieces!

Hardiest pieces first, then once you're happy with how they're going add the pieces that are getting prime locations and follow up with everything else lol that would be my method to the madness of placement :)

LOVE the hardscape, it's just awesome Pifey! :D

Probably less of a risk to move them to the DT since the frag tank is connected to the DT. So, at least you don't have to worry about changes that in chemistry.

That's a great collection of corals. Love how they're growing on the tank bottom.

Believe it or not I never even considered trying less than stellar pieces for a "test". I'm going to plop a couple in tonight when I get home. How's your tank doing?

I. Going to start with some tonight! Like I said above I never even thought to put the hardier pieces in first. It will begin tonight. Thank you. I hope that I have it planned for maximum coral!

I agree. I have the par pretty much matched up too.

I wish they were spreading out in my DT but soon enough they will be. I have started to put some on the back of the frag tank now.

Thank you. It's going to be the combination of a three-year struggle to get a reef in my living room.

I figured it was a good place to start over. I am already looking forward to your new Journal too.

So my wife and I were sitting in the living room watching television and she looks at me and says is that as quiet as that fish tank going to be. I was appalled. Now some of the local guys know I'm not the best of hearing but I can hear my tank and I thought it was very quiet. So I kindly ask her what she thinks needs to be quited down and she came up with quite a list already. I couldn't believe it . But it's a happy wife happy life kind of thing. I'm going to start with replacing all the bearings in my MP40s. I ordered five sets from Boca bearings. I've already done a couple of them with the help of this thread. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1901337&page=8

I'll probably upgrade to all quiet drive wet sides as the one I've already done that to is significantly quieter and in my opinion has a much better spread out flow pattern.

One of the things she really didn't like was the slight trickling of water sound. So I suppose I'm going to need to raise my durso standpipe up some so that the water can be another inch higher in my overflow. That should solve that problem. Another issue she had was with 4 bulb ATI light fixture fan. Of all the things that is what I can hear the easiest. So obviously I'm going to change that last for dramatic effect.

I hear you on the noise aspects. It actually bothers me more than it does my wife...go figure. How tough was it to change out the bearings? I have been considering doing that as well to my older MP40s.

I hear you on the noise issue! It's a constant thing in my household as well. Many people who hear my tank can't believe how quiet it is, I even laminated sound-proofing material into the stand along with all the normal bean overflow, quiet pumps, foam padding, skimmer muffler etc.

This build is looking great! It always goes faster the second time it's posted :D subscribed.

Since your frag tank and display are connected, I'd say prime spots first. I'd say get the good stuff where you want it and work out from there.

Regards,
Abhishek36 inches by 36 inches by 28 inches tall. You'd be surprised at how little par they actually produce. I try to keep everything in between 300 and 500 par. You will notice that there are higher Parts in my scape for particular corals to get the much higher par that they need to pull the colors out of them. Thank for following along.

This is likely to be bacterial bloom. I would increase water flow as you suggested and perhaps point your pumps (if you have such pumps) towards the water surface to increase gaseous exchange. Furthermore, using activated carbon will help remove bacteria as they will be attracted to carbon surfaces. Finally, skim wet. Once the nitrogen cycle stabilises water should clear.

I figured since your new tank was connected to an established system, a mini cycle wasn't a huge possibility...
I used biodigest when I began prodibio. I used Bioptim and biodigest but I didn't really see a significant change in skimmate. When I ran out, I stopped the biodigest but continued with Bioptim and added reef booster.
I just use AF pro bio S because I have it on hand.

[emoji106]That was a Lubbock wrasse. It had an especially nice coloration. Did you catch the past tense? I found it on the floor dead when I got home yesterday. I found a flaw in the canopy in that it has an opening along the edges of the tank. I'm fitting some plastic tonight so that it doesn't happen again.

I am still carbon dosing with vinegar.( trying to drive nitrates lower.) I also dose 2 drops of aquaforest vitamins a day and 2 drops of their fish vitamins soaked into the food every other day. That's it besides the calcium reactor.

I'm happy you can tell that the blue one is OT. That's your run of the mill Tyree pink lemonade. Well, I can tell you that 'manfotto ball head' should be the name of an S and M goth/metal band but I can't tell you if it is worth getting..
I am not knowledgeable about tripods. I either put my lens right up against the glass to hold it steady or stand back and use a longer lens.
I don't think fancy is all that necessary..

I just need to get more time to take pictures with my dslr.

I went to the lake for the day and when I returned 6 fish were missing from my DT. I have located 3 of them in my overflow and haven't found the others. There are no salt water marks next to the tank and no dried carcasses any where. I'm guessing my dogs have figured out how to fish and are having a heck of a good time while I'm gone. They didn't even catch any big fish but I assume that's not what they're telling the neighbor dogs. I'm in a bit of a conundrum with adding more "expenses" fish that I like or not. It's interesting to see the color difference between the frags in my DT and the ones in my frag tank. I need more fish in my DT as some of the corals are paling. I just don't know what to do about the dogs.

I added another coral last night. It wasn't by choice really. I found that my ORA Hawkins echinata became uncomfortable mounted so I grabbed some water weld and super glue and in she went. Pe is good but I'm having some nuisance algae on the sand. It's been a while since I have had sand in a tank and cant remember if this is a normal maturing thing or not.

The orange spot goby is a good sand turner who doesn't toss it around too much. They are pretty good at learning to catch frozen foods and even flake/pellets.
Tough for fish to clean sand and snails stay off of it..
Hermits might help as well..

And if it survives, you'd probably have to run extreme ulns zeo or something to keep it looking like that.
I could be totally off on this one and I think you've already purchased so I apologize for the rain in the parade..
love the fish though!

love the fish though! So I was leary as well but I talked with a friend that says it's the real deal and seen a picture of the colony. While now as white it was still a decent gamble as far as price. I really like to hear everyone's opinions. It helps me further my knowledge on what they look for in a coral. Thanks. I want to pick up a female too. Or read some more and see if I can mix others in the genus. wow wonderful build. love the dimension and the aquascape is killer.Thank you, I wish it was larger but my wife won that argument. Thank you, I hope it looks better with coral! Schweet scores :DThank you. I'm really excited about the swallowtail angel.

Now on to what everyone wants to see, a couple of pictures from tonight. I'm really getting the right combo of corals I want in front of and next to each other. My display should fill up some more soon.

My ASD Rainbow and Wwc ding dang mille are looking amazing. I had to take some pictures for reminders.

I'm curious to see what that acro frag looks like once you get it. Curious to know your feelings about it once you have it in your system...

I did a water change (50 gallons) and some sump maintenence today. I also started getting everything around for a local frag swap in a couple of weeks.

I cleaned all my media (Matrix and Siporax). I also changed out the old containers for since new pond baskets that have holes every where including the bottom. I couldn't belive how dirty the media got in the last section of my sump. I also had quite a bit of detritus in there too. I wonder if this will have an effect on my nutrients.

I've also been testing a Litermeter III for the last week and plan to put it online sometime this week for automatic water changes daily. I'm only doing 5 gallons a day to see if that makes any difference. I'm just looking to replenish the trace elements to try and improve color and to keep from changing large volumes every couple weeks.

Here is the dirty Matrix.

Sorry to hear about the fish losses Brandon, i always feel terribly bummed and always a bit guilty about not keeping a fish i took home alive. :(

I love those latest frag pics, you have a stunning collection of beautiful acros that i'd love to get my hands on, your display is going to look nuts buddy.
Out of interest i grabbed this pic and white balanced it the way i would my own pic because i have kept the exact same tricolor looking thing you have on more than one occasion so i know the colors very well when it's in my tank.

I would say that your colors and more importantly the saturation of them is within 95% of an exact match to mine. Meaning i would be very, very confident that anything you gave me would look pretty much exactly like it does in your water............ just thought you might find it interesting that our acro colors are so similar - even to the extent of color from tip to base on all your acros :) When i ramble on about 'clarity' of colors making a big difference i mean exactly what your colors are showing, dipped in paint colors like you have mate. I found the vitamins were largely responsible for that look which is why i dose them every night but i think i saw you say you were stopping them a while back so i have no idea what i'm talking about as usual lol.

The AquaSD Rainbow millie is fast becoming my favorite coral in my tank. I split one frag into 2, and now both are significantly bigger than the original frag. The color is so intense - metallic red like I've never seen before. That piece you have may become your centerpiece.

I'm sure that algae is sucking it up nicely..
The clean up crew made a dent but not a full clean..
I'd get an urchin there while you are mostly coral free..
Get that turf off. You might see a rise in nutrients as the turf gets eaten but since you have an established system, maybe not.
I don't see anything alarming about what's happening, just a shortage of little mouths to eat salad.
Otherwise, everybody looks good!

Thanks for the advice. I added an urchin yesterday and itreally clean the algae off right down to the rock. I think this time next week everything will be cleaned up. Because of your recent pictures of ice fire I had to go buy another one and put it right into the display. I have never had luck with them but it's in a nice sheltered spot so I'm hoping for different results. As for that ultraviolet frag I bought is browning out beautifully. :hmm2: But has some nice blue polyps I haven't been able to capture with a photo yet.

Brandon, it can't be a surprise that it's browning.. probably a good thing. Better to be browning than to be rtning, which is what I think it was on the verge of doing.
Hopefully it'll brown out, recover and then turn into something very cool again.

Off to a great start Brandon, water weld is twice the price of aquarium putty in Aus so isn't a cheap DIY alternative like the hardware plumbing putty i use made by Selley's. I assume you use it because it's as cheap as aquarium brands ?

Btw, i forgot to say earlier - love the pic of you and your son at the frag meet mate :)

Thanks. It's cheaper than aquarium putty locally. I'll look up the stuff you use and see if we can get it here.

Is that urchin still mowing his way through the algae?Thank you. I have had some recent issues and some corals have stalled while others are booming. That urchin is one of the best reef purchases I've made. My family and everyone that comes over always gravitate to looking at it. Thank you for the great suggestion.

The algae is drying up so to speak. I finally have what I feel to be sufficient flow and that is making good changes through out the system. I have 6 mp40s running on different setting and flow rates through out the day. I am planing on changing it up a bit too as I've been tinkering with them and have a couple of patterns I really like. Now I just need to implement them.

I've had a series of small issues that have been holding my tank back the last 30 to 60 days. I've had several pieces Stn that have disappointed me a bunch.

1. Found my salinity to be 1.022

The cause was a leaking needle wheel pump on my skimmer. I had noticed an up tick in top off water being used but I didn't really think about it because of the frag swap I was preparing for.

2. Low calcium

This was very weird. I noticed that my ph was finally getting back to normal after several months of being low. After tracking it for about a week I noticed the ph in my calcium reactor was going lower and lower. I figured that my co2 was out so I went about changing out. When I looked at the gauge it was still reading full. I was perplexed and decided to grab a beer and look at the situation from a different stand point. So I'm standing there staring at my calcium reactor when I noticed I wasn't getting very much co2 released in the sight glass and it was filled with I'm assuming calcium carbonate sludge. I had to tear the sight glass apart and clean it all out. The co2 tube was almost completely blocked.

3. Alk being maintained

Somehow my alkalinity was maintained while the calcium reactor was messing up. Come to find out somehow my alkalinity dosing pump was in automatic mode on my apex. I have no idea how this happened but I removed the jug of alkalinity to solve this issue from happening again.

Now I'm still bringing up the calcium and salinity. I hope getting everything back inline will really give my system the boost it needs.

It’s always something with these damn reef tanks!
So, you run a dosing pump for alkalinity only, on top of running a ca reactor?
Never seen that..

Never seen that..It is always something... Not normally. When I was starting the tank I used 2 part. Then I switched over to my calcium reactor. I left them installed and now use a channel for dosing vinegar. I fired the alk pump back up like 6 months ago to let my calcium and magnesium fall to NSW levels. I haven't used it in many months but somehow it got turned to auto in fusion.

I snapped a couple of pictures of the ultraviolet frag as it's getting the pearlescent back. I definitely can not capture the color good.

Something is going on with my reef and it isn't good. Almost burnt tips and polyps still on the acros. I will have my auto water change finished tomorrow so hopefully getting some fresh water will help. I might do a large water change also. All of my test look good so I'm kinda at a loss.

Nitrates 2.5
Phosphates .05
Alk 8
Calcium 415
Mag 1300
Salinity 1.025

I haven't changed anything except my calcium reactor a bit. I'm thinking this might be residual damage from my low calcium and low salinity. It really sucks because I am having a fish club get together next week and would have liked my system and corals to be in great condition.

On a better note I finally got my DT lights mounted much better. I fabricated a bracket out of aluminum diamond plate so now the lights just slide in and out for easy cleaning and bulb replacement. I think I will add another bracket to add a piece of acrylic to keeps the lights themselves cleaner and then I can just have to remove the extra piece of acrylic to clean. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171014/dd0c393f88cd55a291b4c1e64896b28b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171014/3a8d946117ac1e906ba90928898106f4.jpg

that is a bummer to see. when I had an issue like that earlier this year. It turned out to be higher heavy metals and using RO/DI with TDS at 4 which I completely forgot to look at.

Once I changed filters and got TDS down to 0, did a couple of water changes everything bounced back. Hopefully it is something easy like that to fix.

Add I was making water up to fire up my litermeter for automatic water changes I mixed the water up to 1.033. This made me wonder about my systems salinity..... It was 1.031! Some how I may have added way too much salt when I was bringing the salinity up for my last debacle. I tested with my digital Milwaukee (great investment) and 2 other refactometers. I then tested them against my calibration fluid and feel really really dumb. I can't believe I did that.

I finally got around to dismantling my frag tank so that I could catch all the fish and put them in my display. It was quite the task removing all the coral. Only took around two hours total. At the end I get all the coral put back in and what do I see swimming around but my male leopard wrasse. Somehow I missed him. I need to go down there when it's time for the lights to go off and watch where he buries and grab them out of the sand. The anthias were still too shifty to catch so it looks like they get to stay in frag tank.

That's meteor shower covering the bottom of the frag rack!

I also scored a great deal on a super male flame wrasse.

All of my coral seems to be turning the corner. It sucks when things are going bad but it makes me appreciate the good times. It also makes me simplify processes.

I finally got my good camera out and started messing. I should have cleaned the glass but I only had 20 minutes to mess around. I was able to get the white balance dialed in. That was what I didn't most of the time doing. That and getting my remote shutter release to work. (I didn't) here are some of the best. I can only get better from here too.

I'll just have to practice more. Do you crop more than 50 percent of any picture?

My system is turning around and may corals are taking off work growth and color is coming back around. I've been out of town for several days and my wife has been carrying for my tank and I was surprised by the growth. Glad to hear things are getting into the growth swing..

I do crop some of my shots but if they get cropped a lot, you can start to see the clarity decline.
If I crop like that, I’ll resharpen the pic but it only helps a bit.
The higher the quality of the original pic, the better a cropped image will be.
Shooting in raw will give you the best end results..

My system is looking better and better every day. I'm noticing dramatic color changes daily. Pe is good and almost everything is growing again. My ph is back up high which is weird but when it's been nice and high I've had great growth. I'm keeping things simple and not dosing anything except vitamins daily and lots of food. I love the urchin. They will be in every system of mine from here on out. They are Great algae eaters and it doesn't mess with my corals as I glue them with super glue and water weld.

I'd never put one in a frag tank.

Loving it man! The scape gets cooler with every update :D

Thanks. I can't wait for it to be grown in but it's a double edged sword...

Since pictures of my new fish. The warasses buried so no pictures of them yet.

Hey Brandon, nice leopards and regal.
What’s the other wrasse?

That's a Pintail fairy wrasse.

Regals are stunning angels. And the mis-bar is pretty cool. I tried a regal, majestic and emperor Angel a couple years ago. Stunning fish but they reduced daytime polyp extension dramatically. I don’t think they harmed anything though, just reduced polyp extension. I think regals are one of the most spectacular saltwater fish. Looking forward to pictures of your earmuff wrasses—beauties as well

Thanks. Did you add the angels all at once? Did you find one picked more than the others?

Here's a couple pictures of the earmuffs. I need to download some of the better pictures off my camera. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171126/4baee6d14b7d16a3c702ea854da8e254.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171126/3e22c0f03c50885cc68203cd5f0de6c2.jpg

Is not very often I see all nineteen fish. I think I got them all in the picture too. The red mandarin is hardest to see in the rock work.

There were twenty until Thanksgiving day. My favorite fish passed. He was a red headed wrasse. The night before he died he was only half buried and I thought that war very odd. RIP LIL BUDDY

Just a reminder to check your apex settings. For some reason when I updated my apex my auto feeder got switched to a heater and has been feeding tons of food for a couple of months. I've been fighting higher than normal nutrients and only found this by accident. Changed it to six feedings a day and my nitrates bottomed out in 2 days. I'm turning down carbon dosing daily until I get a good balance.

I don't know much about urchins but it looks like you have a pincushion. How do you like it? Thinking about getting one.

The one I have is a tuxedo urchin. He is the most amazing clean up crew. I would never put one in a tank if you don't securely mount frags. They will surely carry them off.

A new page needs pictures.

The first picture is my favorite coral right now. The second is my new homewrecker. Hopefully I can color it up. I'm going to try and do weekly updates on it. The next picture is one of my many no names. It had wonderful white polyps. There are then a couple of pictures of the tip burn I'm getting on my fox flame. My Aqua sd rainbow mille is finally coming back around. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171204/b2cffb5d4ec98a81962a852eb71dccfb.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171204/e89a14b17a9b4cf5ed2bb513deaa8498.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171204/eda4fd9ef3302e4f3927f6e8360c02a3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171204/2dd794f9e76b788b55c79b4109c4b9b4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171204/1958f133545c242715d8a4e0e79dab90.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171204/748d5df316280b124cbe9340bb6e4c2c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171204/20a808d1e5cd392142f4e9b0c8f32ec2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171204/fd4adee80df3ff5f7a062c87172b490f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171204/1eea84d465084aaedbbb19b4f38ced6a.jpg

I wish I had a couch where my tank is..
All i got is a rowing machine, a hockey net, sticks and workout stuff.
Keep me fit though..
Brandon, how’s the cleanup crew doing in the algae?
Nice collection of fish you’re amassing!

It is easy to waste the night away look at the tank. My wife often asks if I even know what's going on with the movie we're watching. There is very little algae left. I get brown in the sand every day though.

Come on over buddy. Bring another frag of the pink acro too. I killed the last one.
