View Full Version : Photo hosting site suggestions

Well, as we all know, Photobucket has become a money grab..
Wondering where to go next..
I am considering starting to use tapatalk because apparently, it'll take the images right off my phone and share them... not exactly sure how this works...This is good for me because I have every image I've ever posted already on my phone but at one point I assume my phone will run out of space.. but gen again maybe not..
Anyways!
Let's see what people are using and why (if there is any particular reason- I assume they all work pretty much the same) you chose the site.
I'm not necessarily looking for a free option either. I'd be willing to pay a reasonable amount to get decent storage, reliability, was of use and decent security of my images...

So I don't believe that with Tapatalk you have to keep the images on your phone. When I 1st started hosting pictures on the internet I used Flickr. I probably would have went back to it but for some reason I cannot get into my account through their app and that is a no-go for me. A lot of people are using Imgur but I haven't been able to figure it out.

I use flickr now too.

I don't mind paying either since I know that the internet is not free, but the way that photobucket went about it seems more like extortion and it turned me off. I would have been happier if they just charged a bit moving forward for all new photos and did not wreck threads and boards all over the internet. ...so I will take my money elsewhere.

I cancelled my account with PB, I left them a pretty direct message as to why I deleted my account, lol... I noticed I was a member since 2008 with PB, no email, no updates, and only found out when I tried to attach pics, good thing my new journal is getting started. When I just logged in to delete my account, I counted 5 pop ups and a new window opened in chrome, also that every click I made on links took way too much time to load, so glad to be done. Flickr is much easier and faster, so truly a blessing in disguise :)

I've had a Flickr account for a year but never used it. I was just looking at it and discovered it's been on auto upload for the past year! Lots of photos there.. gonna delete them.
But it says they give you 1000 gb free! That's a lot of space.

So, how does tapatalk work? I've never used it. Do they have a cloud based photo sharing doohickey? (Yes, that's a technical term that only serious internets <yes, ALL of them!> savvy people use!!) do have to upload photos to it?

Yea. When you attach a photo it's uploaded to their servers and they keep it there for you.

How much storage do they allow and do they start charging after a certain amount?

Glad to see you are planning to take only a short break Andrew :D

I do not want to bash PB, so I think that the best thing to do is to promote their competition, lol... :) Also, we have to make sure that Andrew has options, otherwise you may go into Acro Porn withdrawal, not a good thing for an addict ;)

I started using Flicker a few weeks before PB started charging and have been happy with it. It's easier to use and faster.

Even if PB went back to no charge I won't go back as the ads and pop ups became insufferable..............at other times it would lock up my browser.

My only concern with any of these "free" sites is that they could very well do the same.

I'm interested in paying for storage space so my photos won't be lost if there's anything with reasonable pricing.

Been using tapatalk for many many years on other forums. Honestly it makes life super easy if your using your phone a lot. And things I have posted from other phones that no longer work are still on the sites I posted.

Yep,
Exactly my sentiments over here, I cannot believe how much faster Flickr is compared to PB, my browser locked up, virus alerts, pop up ads, and most of all, horribly slow. Luckily for me, I have all my photos backed up on hard drive. I also agree that eventually the other "free" sites will do the same. Not trying to start a conflict here on RC, as I have been a loyal contributor for years, but the competition, the other popular reef site, has direct upload capabilities, I would imagine RC could do this too. This would cut out the middle man so to speak :) Not sure how one would go about encouraging this upgrade? Heck, I would be willing to upgrade my RC account for this option, this could be a premium membership privilege.....hmmm

Also agree totally.. I tried to use PB to post an album of soccer photos for the parents of my daughter's team to look at but they were not able to actually access the photos because of all the spam and pop ups that assault you when you go to the Photobucket site.
A buddy of mine surmised that Photobucket doesn't care about us and is more interested in the 'adult content users' who will pay through the.... nose to keep their photos...
Certainly is in line with how the site seems to operate..
.. I guess that's a bit of bashing, isn't it, Perry.. oh well :) couldn't resist.
I'm leaning towards Flickr I think..
I've never used tapatalk and am very comfortable using my phone with out it when accessing RC.
I've had a Flickr account for like a year that I've never used and recently I noticed that it's been auto uploading all my photos. It's got over a 1000 of my photos that I didn't know where there.. lots of dog, kids and coral shots..
I'll delete and start over, I guess

For those who used Photobucket before, you have till 8/16 to fix your image links.

One option is to add ~original to your current Photobucket URL and your links will work again.

I checked your thread, and your photobucket links work. Are you a photobucket paid subscriber? If so, then you really don't need to do anything.

for example, in walt disney acro thread, this link is bad

I'm not the most literate person when it comes to these things. I tried Flickr but couldn't figure out how to post. When I went to share the only options I would get was for Facebook & stuff like that. I tried tapatalk but I didn't like how the forum layout was different, but that may have just been me.

I then tried imgur & couldn't figure it out at first. I am always on my phone, I don't even have a computer. I finally figured out imgur & the reason I couldn't post photos at first was because I was on the app. I went to the desktop site & then it would bring up the links so I could post. So I figured out how to post a pic & the pics would show up huge on rc, so I spent 2 more days figuring out how to size the pics so they would be a normal size.

I think I would rather use Flickr but I just can't figure out how to get the links to copy so I can post them

Yes. I'm a paying PB user. I have until December 2018 to start paying $400/yr.. which I won't do. So, in a year from this December my links will fail as well..

I still don't understand how adding ~original fixes the link.. also, it seems like a hack to me.. once Photobucket realizes that people are adding that to the URL to fix the link, they will disable that as well.... won't they??
It is effectively giving the user the ability to use the third party hosting again.. PB surely will Sshut this down as well..

Hey Ed, thanks for the explanation. I think you are doing this from a pc..
The options are not the same on the mobile app. The 'export' arrow is there but the only options that come up (besides adding the photo to an email, text, fb Instagram etc) is 'copy url'
When I do this and paste it here, it only adds the link and not the image.
Well, I guess Flickr is out since I post 100% of my images using my phone.

Gonna look at imgur and postimage I guess..

if the photobucket url has html, you need to do a few more steps to get it to work.

in your one fifty glass box thread post #301
you right click on the picture and copy link (or copy image location).

http://s837.photobucket.com/user/PfeifferBrandon/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-06/20170618_205224_zpsnjblupg4.jpg.html

paste that to a web browser to go to the photobucket page of the image.
then copy the direct url, then edit post #301 and replace the url between the img tags with the direct link url and then add ~original to it, like this

http://i837.photobucket.com/albums/zz298/PfeifferBrandon/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-06/20170618_205224_zpsnjblupg4.jpg~original

When choosing a photo hosting site, consider the financial strength of its parent. Photobuckets current owners, once a startup called Ontella need to make money so they switched it to a pay site. Its valuation back in 2009 was only $60m, a pittance in today's world of unicorns.

I'd suggest looking into the financial viability of other alternatives as well so that we can avoid having this sort of problem being faced by online communities like this in the near future.

Flickr - Verizon, a telco, acquired it from Yahoo recently. It's safe for a few years until Verizon figures out what its media and online services mean in the telecom convergence world. My bet is Flickr is not a money maker as a stand-alone, and if VZ can't realize synergies for Flickr traffic and monetize it into profitability, it will change hands. Telcos have been muddling in convergence for decades without being able to figure out how to make money off it (see Time Warner and AOL).

Google has a photo sharing service and is free. And it is certainly amongst the strongest financially and is (likely) using cloud services like email and photo sharing as a loss leader. It knows how to make money from internet traffic. Given its financial status, the bleeding from this side likely isn't felt by them. (I do not work for google.).

Facebook also has a free photo storage and sharing. Current limits are 200 albums, and a limit of 1000 photos per album. It is financially stout, and uses photosharing as an integral part of its business.

Instagram is an unlimited photo sharing service owned by facebook.

I am making this suggestion as I am saddened by what's happening across this site and I'd hate to see the visual history of this hobby go down every 2 years due to strategic shifts at "free" hosting firms.

Cheers!

As I said in your thread Matt, I have been using FlickR and been happy with it. FWIW, I use an iMac to upload images. I also have an Imgur account. I will be distributing my images to different hosts reduce my exposure to risk. Both hosts allow images to be stored in their original size and then let you choose the size you want at the time of embedding them in your thread.

I'm glad you found it. Many users are not cognizant of it. A lot of image hosting companies have gone under. Photobucket is having challenges and is trying to have its customers pay for its service in order to save itself.

Imgur is, unfortunately, a private start up as well. Its fortunes are tied to how popular Reddit is. It raised funding 3 years ago from founders of netscape. It is trying to develop a different monetization model than its predecessors. Ultimately, it is built to be sold (it hopes) as all tech companies are, to a large consolidator, i.e. Flickr sold to Yahoo then to Verizon.

Will it succeed? It's questionable as the history of start-ups in this narrow category is not good. Nobody's gone on to become a google of photo sharing businesses. As you will notice, its an invisible service - i.e. end users do not see who's hosting the files. That makes it difficult to sell advertising, etc.

Chances are strong Imgur will go the way of others unless it creates a unique appeal as a mobile app i.e. snapchat, instagram etc.

Instagram is free hosting service as well. It is owned by facebook, and should last for years and I'd recommend its use.

AkoAung, you have great insight and suggestions.
I use google plus for sharing photos by emailing the link of an album to family and friends but I don't think they support 3rd party hosting, nor does Instagram..
And it seems even a narrower group- if any besides tapatalk support it from a mobile device..

I'm in the same boat as u Matt. I never could figure out flickr from my mobile phone & all the instructions that I see are for a computer. It just doesn't give u the option to be able to copy on a mobile. If I highlight it & copy it comes out a blank square when I post the pic.

I did figure out imgur by going to the desktop site instead of mobile or being in the app. Once I went to desktop I was able to figure out how to post but it was a pain to do. I had to resize every photo individually, plus being on the desktop site just doesn't work great from a mobile phone.

Postimage was by far the easiest from a mobile phone

I'll be honest, I've never used instagram to post pictures, just to follow some sports personalities. I thought it might have a photo sharing feature.

Google Photos is the particular service I am referring to:

https://photos.google.com/

I'll be honest, I've never used instagram to post pictures, just to follow some sports personalities. I thought it might have a photo sharing feature.

Google Photos is the particular service I am referring to:

https://photos.google.com/

It is a sharing and hosting service and it is also free.
I have used it to post pictures in the past. Tell me if this random pic works:

Yup worked. You are using your computer?
I don't think the google plus app has the feature.. like Flickr.. or I can't seem to find it..
Bugs me that all the phone apps don't have all the features the website have..

I have to retract the use of Instagram. It is designed to be mobile use only. So for those using regular cameras will find it a bit more challenging to post.

Well that's great! Yes I posted from computer as photos from compact cameras are inevitably better than my phone's camera. I haven't tried posting pictures to a forum from my phone yet. Though if you use the phone's browser, or tapatalk and link the pics from google photo or facebook photo to the forum post I can't see why that won't work.

Yes. Tapatalk may be the way to go for me as a mobile user.
I download my photos from my sale directly to my phone and post them..
Trying a copied link from Instagram..

Though if you use the phone's browser, or tapatalk and link the pics from phone's picture library to the forum post I can't see why that won't work.

I am about to ditch FlickR because Photos on my iMac cannot connect to my FlickR account. It is pain in the back side to move images to desktop and then upload them to FlickR. It reduces my efficiency.

I have created a Google Photos account as you suggested and uploaded all my images from my iPhone using Google's App to my account. I think Google Photos is great in its own right. For example, all my coral pictures were put in an album called Reef. All my FTS photos are in an album called Aquarium.

I have tried to embed a test image on RC like you did above using my iMac. But failed to do so. Would you mind guiding me on how to do this please?

I followed the two steps shown in the pictures below, but sadly the link I get is not the right one. First, I selected an image and then click the share icon as shown below:

Thanks in advance.

I also use the postimage site to post from my mobile. When posting from my mobile, the image gets copied to my mobile clipboard and then I just paste it into the thread from there. Easy, Peasy:thumbsup:

So you copy the image and past it?
Not the URL?
Interesting. Hadn't thought of trying that.

Just tried.. no option to paste once here. From google photos..
I'll try it on a couple other sites
I'm just wondering about postimage.. if it'll still be around in a year or two.. and still free, or reasonably priced.

What type of phone? How do you copy to a clipboard?
My iPhone doesn't have an option to copy to a clipboard.. that I know off.

I'm just wondering about postimage.. if it'll still be around in a year or two.. and still free, or reasonably priced.

What type of phone? How do you copy to a clipboard?
My iPhone doesn't have an option to copy to a clipboard.. that I know off.

I have a samsung galaxy. Once the photo is in my clipboard, all I have to do is touch the reply box in the forum I want to post in and touch paste. Very simple, but I'm not sure how it works on an iPhone, sorry.

I tried google photos & couldn't get it to work on mobile eighther. I couldn't get the third party hosting from my mobile just like Flickr.

Postimage is the best way I have found on a mobile & it is actually easier to figure out then Photobucket was. If u go to the site it self explanatory & very easy to figure out. Tapatalk would be another good option on a mobile but I don't like the forum layout on tapatalk so I'm going to stick to postimage.

I go to the site & select upload & this screen comes up. I then go to choose images

Once u select a photo this page comes up & I just copy the direct link.

Then go back to rc & select/ paste just like u used to with photobucket. I didn't resize the pics so they are a little bigger & should be the size of u don't resize them. It is very easy & that is saying something coming from me, I'm not great with computer stuff.
Btw Matt, I have a iPhone so yours should be the same as this. I spent a week trying to figure out flickr, imgur, google & one or two more with little success. It took me 5 mins once I found postimage

As others have mentioned, I use postimage.org. It's free and super easy to upload, resize and categorize your photos. It's also very easy to link images to RC or any other forums you frequent. I've been using it for a few year without any problems.

I also use the postimage site to post from my mobile. When posting from my mobile, the image gets copied to my mobile clipboard and then I just paste it into the thread from there. Easy, Peasy:thumbsup:

Hi DiscusHeckel,

I may have forgotten one step which I've added - please make sure that the particular album's sharing is turned ON like so:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/2JfeIFNpoW8lWWgAD6iyLdtrC_vrBgNMny-s-B3pQDnU8zQn9Y1jAVgX0oGTrH7scMDjgzCaWG1alHGpXP8dATGO1gGcn4RReLO3__yPQ3F3eMsaYIcdxJRHPCsxLh2HEhuU_XIQk cdNMBw8bAEYNX0B4cdTedm-2ptOrzhCYbCo4WYwDxRs592mPszB5tF2QSqVJ4_zIWpxY8GYwFSiQFrs-Zb5LxmJNFPS0tk37fayCr_T_H-86-l2-dVaNHlD_iZGsGyjOrseT3yIifgmHJFNdmkFAtmWAXLKXrrXYaiG2i0Gd6S6_VfgIF-eOWNPsKj8Rh8RfLq6K303G_9nGmR9gixW5FEMfe8MChhWiYsDnkE4_QbdcUY5Y_TM7tNVJ4UIXGVeVdpgxICg_2hS8mFrPIAhZvt S0zB4qYM3nKgwf5hL646-LLmMYZ_tXw-2wep9DFXX80xzpQTwRtrYn8ruD6fLBbSx4rXTU6ReOk1bslt7030fEWUpAKkFNogvRPZG9MxOciHAMxDkTXNwsnBjsrSzxMEJKac BFD46AhOBU8Xu7fL4FuyppXriS90IS6mPpZHU4Y5iqW32Gb-9nbg1VTkr99FWzlq2KiF5BzD1Mi0Ogm1A=w656-h991-no

I have created just a normal album (not a shared one) and followed your steps, it seems to be working. Shared album allows people to comment on your photos if you provide its link to them. So an album does not have to be a shared one. My previous picture disappeared from my earlier post because I deleted that particular picture by mistake.

Test.. from postimage. Unfortunately they don't have an app so you have to go to the website each time you want to post but I can live with that..
Here's my new WD. Going to also post on that thread..

Hat was 'direct link'..
Nope.
Here's 'hot link for forums'

Postimage isn't on the soundest footing either. It is possible that due to photobucket's recent moves they along with other competitors will get more traffic and thus more revenue. User beware.
