I've read that they are reef-safe and peaceful. But they will eat anything that can fit in their mouths. So what can be kept with them, anything?

IME, nothing! We had one when I was a kid...it grew like Jack's beanstalk and devoured everything that could fit in its (very large and constantly growing) mouth. We finally took it back to the spot where my dad had collected it--at which point it bit him before he could finally turn it loose. Interesting fish, but definitely one for a species tank.

What's your fascination with them, I currently have a wartskin and have kept painted as well. I think to fully enjoy them they are best kept in a species tank. They aren't that active, they are ambush predators that just kind of wait for food to come to them. As far as what can go with them; they can actually eat a fish as large as themselves, and will. It's not the size of their mouth, it's the size of their body. So any fish that are larger than them and won't pick on them.
