I can not figure out what this stuff is. It doesn't go away at night. It's spreading but not quickly. It doesn't get "worse" in the day. I don't think any of my snails (Astraea, Cerith, Trochus) touch it. It does form some air bubbles but not a lot. If you look close it looks like pods are moving all over in it. One of the pictures even shows the pods.

Any ideas?

Trying to ID the brown fluffy stuff. Not the red cyanobacteria. I'm winning that battle slowly

New rock/tank?

I don't have an ID for you, but what your seeing is nothing out of the ordinary IME. A phase so to say...

On aside note; you should know better by now... ROTM, lol

On aside note; you should know better by now... ROTM, lolROTM doesn't designate that I have all knowledge and nothing to learn. The second you think that about this hobby, you're screwed. Always something new to be discovered.

The tank is about 5 months old but the rock is nearing a year since I started curing and setting things up.

I just want to make sure it isn't something that will hang around forever if I don't treat for it, naturally or chemically.

I've lost count of how many tanks I've had, started, and/or maintained. I've never seen this exact stuff. So better to ID it then let it run rampant.

I have seen that in other tanks (pictures posted on this site) before but I do not know what it is..

To me it looks more like a sponge than algae and I personally have a small patch that looks very similar to that too but it has not spread nor has it caused an issue.. It was on a rock that I flipped over and that stuff was growing in the dark/fully shaded side of the rock basically..

No idea either. I had a weird outbreak at about 5 months AND was using older cured rock also. Do you have a GFO or are you vinegar dosing?

I also thought sponge originally but it loves high light so far. What baffles me is that pods love to hang out in it. Likes a food source for them which would indicate algae or diatoms IME...

No GFO and vinegar is very rarely used. I dose MicroBacter 7 once in a while and add a tiny amount of vinegar to help feed it. Like I said though, it's rare I do that. My old 40B ran on vodka and MB7 and did quite well. I'm just not there with this tank and not sure I'll go back to the route.

Thanks everyone!

I've figured out what it is...now to fix the issue.

What I have is chrysophytes or golden algae. Anyone on here dealt with it before? It looks like phosphate removal media, toothbrush and blackout are the best course of action.
