Covering an old tank stand

Has anyone ever covered an old stand using new wood?

The stand's integrity is still there. After looking on a lot of sights and checking out a lot of new stands I just don't want to spend $1500 on a new quality stand.

I'm pretty handy with wood, just trying to come up with a solid plan.

Sure it can be done..
Wood can be refinished or easily stripped/replaced..
Same can really be said for metal,etc...

Now get a solid stone stand or one made of diamonds and I'd have to go with a no.. but just about any other material out there and "reworking/refinished,etc.." is easily accomplished..

if the stand is made of wood (not mdf), you can always sand it down and paint or stain and it will look like new.

depending on what you want to do and the tools you currently have, you can figure what it will cost you to refurbish (add cost of tools you need to buy, not just materials) vs getting a new one.

Can also be "skinned" with oak plywood, etc.

Absolutely it can, and there a all sorts of different options.

I have gone over old all-glass stands with a "stone spray paint" that gives a speckled somewhat textured appearance. Not bad looking at all, and it s super easy.

Depending on how its built, you can veneer over it, sand it, or strip it. Nothing really is going to affect the strength of the stand.
