View Full Version : New Tank how to check for leaks?

I received the Nuvo 30 gallon tank. It was packed in peanuts and bubble wrap.

To make it short, I setup a 10 gallon QT a month ago. Tested a rechargable
air pump, left the air hose with air stone in the tank. Disconnect the other
end going to air pump and had it dangling on outside of the tank.
In rush to get to work I left as is. Got a call in the evening of water leaking.

Came home and 4 gallons had leaked out through the hose. I am on
2nd floor apartment and they said it damaged ceiling below me.
Even insurance adjuster said it is hard to believe. It was 4 gallons that leaked
out. It cost $500 in damages.

So I am super paranoid with water leaks now. When I set up the 30 gallon,
would filling it only a 1-2" above the sand really show anything? I know
it's the full tank of water where the real pressure is plus water flow.

I have a metal stand, leveling mat and will check it's level before setting up.

And yes, I have air check valves on all my air hose connections now, ugh...

Whatís the floor made of paper lol... I live in a apartment to and the way I will check for leaks since itís a small tank... place it outside on the balcony and fill it half way... looks good in like a half our I fill it all the way... more than likely it was the air stone.. the check valves will fail and itíll leak that way.. happened to me before

On a brand new 30g tank I wouldn't worry too much about leaks. Just fill it up and give it a once over.

Sounds like you learned your lesson with the air line siphon.

YES, PAPER!!!

I can hear people snore below me and they charge almost $2K/month
for a 750sq. Ft box they call an apartment home.

Don't have space in balcony, full of plants. Went from garden plants
to saltwater plants lol

Yes, that was an expensive lesson

I would set it up and fill with regular tap water and let it sit for a few days, checking each day.
