View Full Version : 1st skimmer decision

I have a 90 gallon. I'm looking at posts and cant decide on a skimmer. I'm looking for it being quiet, and easy to maintain. I am using a 40g high tank for the sump. So space isnt an issue.

Here are the skimmers

1. Reef Octopus Classic 150INT
Comes with Aquatrance 2000 pump. I cant find info on this pump. I see it says its adjustable, so I assume that means its a dc pump? Those are quiet, compared to ac, correct?

2. SCA-302
Comes with an Atman 2000 pump. Again not sure on this pump

3. Bubble Magus Curve 5
Comes with SP1000 internal pump
Also not sure on this as one blog stated customer service was an issue.

Are there any other suggestions?

I have only had the SCA-302 but let me give some advice.

Don't oversize the skimmer too much.

I had the SCA-302 on a 125 with 30 gallon sump, but tank is lightly stocked.
The skimmer would not work sometimes because there was not enough skimmate to fill the cone. I changed to a smaller Aqua C remora and now have more consistent results.

For what it's worth, the pump on the SCA was still good after over 2 years.
