Stocking my 125 Gallon Saltwater FOWLR

Hello! I am finally getting to upgrade my 40 Gallon breeder to a nice 6 foot 125 gallon aquarium. For now I plan on it being a FOWLR but it’s possible I could throw in some hammer coral or something in the future. I wanted opinions on my stocking list, because although I’m eager to begin owning some larger, more beautiful fish, the last thing I want is for them to be cramped or suffer. I was hoping people could give me their opinions on this list:

-2 mated clownfish
-1 yellow tang
-1 powder blue tang
-3 anthias (not sure what kind, open to suggestions)
-1 Harlequin Tusk
-2 longspine urchin
-and MAYBE a bird wrasse or some kind of wrasse


I will be running over 100 pounds of LR and sand, and in the beginning I will be limited to one reef octopus BH2000 skimmer (until I can afford to buy a second one in the future... I would run a sump but my stand does not allow for one.)

I'm not a big fan of Powder Blues in a 125. I know most charts say a 125 is appropriate for a PB, but they are very aggressive (besides being super prone to just about every fish disease there is) and in a 125 you are going to have issues with its aggression. If a PB is a must have fish for you be sure to make it the last fish you add and I certainly would make it your only tang.

I agree. IMO, they need a 180. I also don't agree with the Tusk being in a 125 either. IME with Tusk, I had one that eat smaller fish. Just something to be prepared for.

Agree with the powder blue.

I was going to comment about the tusk, but I don't have much experience with them. What do you guys think about the bird wrasse? That's another one that seems too big, but again, I lack experience there.

No experience for me with the Bird Wrasse. IMO, it may be borderline.

I have a 6' 125g myself, and here's what I currently have, in the event it offers any inspiration...


2 Picasso Clowns
1 Scooter Dragonet
1 One-Spot Foxface
1 Yellow Eye Kole Tang
1 Starry Blenny
1 Diamond Goby
3 Lyretail Anthias


I'll likely be adding a Bird wrasse (still unsure) soon, I love their long "beaks!"

No tank will ever be as big as the ocean.....
