I have a Powder Blue Tang who is about 6 inches long. He has just starting nipping and eating some corals. Mainly zoas right now but also nipping a Duncan. I have a 150 with twin rock work. Does anyone have a method to capture a fish without removing all of the rock?
Thank You!

He is probably just eating the algae off those pieces. My powder blue loves to graze all day long. Do you feed it nori everyday or every other day. Those tNgs are pretty Reef safe imo

Ya the tang should only be eating the algae around the corals

But if you want to catch it I have always had luck using a long vase and frozen food at the bottom.... and patience until he swims far enough in

The Powder Blue is eating the zoas as I watch him pick them off. He is also hitting the Duncan. Not sure what else he may be hitting.
Thank you for the vase trick. I will try this!

Your tang is lacking proper algae in its diet if in fact its eating corals.

If you have a healthy powder blue if you catch him many people will take him.

Thank you all again! I feed 3 sheets per day. The last thing he is is skinny. Fattest Blue Tang I've seen.

Tangs don’t really eat Zoas. Do you have a picture of the Zoas and him doing it. Not saying your wrong just saying it’s very uncommon

I'm sorry but after I just bought 6 high end zoas and he ate about half of them I'm not putting them back so I can take a picture of him eating the rest of them. I watched him do it with my own eyes. I've seen a few others with the same issue. I guess I was just unlucky with the one I have as it does seem to be almost unheard of.

Where are you at? I would kill for a zoanthid eating fish!

Wow, that is strange indeed. I have seen my tangs "pick" at some of the corals... usually the brain corals. But they don't seem to really bite them, just kind of mouth them without bothering the corals at all. I am not sure what they are doing to be honest. Maybe eating some film or slime? They also get fed a lot and are super fat so I know there is no deficiency.
As for your fish, that is certainly unfortunate. I'm sure you'll have no problem selling the fish and there are a ton of other species you could try if you feel burned by this one in particular.

tangs always fall for fish traps. I put a sheet of algae inside the trap and hide nearby.

Forget tearing the tank apart or buying a pricey fish trap, just run to your local pet shop and buy a plastic fish bowl; sink that in the tank with a piece of liverock, and with a simple turkey baster, feed there exclusively. Over the course of a couple days even your firefish will resort to darting in for a snack. Once you've got the powder blue in custody, slap a net over the opening of the bowl and yank the whole thing to the surface. Good luck
