View Full Version : Aiptasia?

I'm guessing this us Aiptasia popping out of the rock?
New piece of LR I added to the tank. I have a duster worm on it so I don't want to nuke it with bleach or hot water if possible.

Sorry I tried posting off of my phone and I didn't select the picture correctly.

What I see in my tank looks similar to your image but I noticed a darker ring on the head around what I have and there is a little white spot close to the middle of each tentacle.

Looks like Aiptasia which I’ve had several bouts with and the only thing that worked was the introduction of a few berghia nudis and patience. Everything else didn’t abate their spread. Berghias and patience will prevail. My story anyway

I have had luck just using a syringe of near boiling water on them when they first start this way your not introducing chemicals into your tank.

I'm going to pull the rock when I get home and get it in a bucket.
Is there a safe way to remove the 2 large feather duster worms so I can keep them in the DT while working on the rock?

Are the feather dusters placed so that you could put something over them to protect them, and zap the Aiptasia?

Yes they are on each side of a 3 pound rock. They are just 'common' feather dusters like petco always carries. I wasn't sure if I could gently wiggle them off at the base of their tubes.

I've always had great luck with peppermint shrimp, but you have to know what you're looking at- many LFS's will sell camel shrimp as peppermints.

No the worms will not likely come off without tearing. Target attack the aptasia. Luckily I've never had it but I use chemicals all the time so I would first try boiling them off then if not successful I would use Aptasia X.

Yup, peps are best for Apastia, but they need time...

Will a peppermint shrimp mess with my pom pom crab? They would be in a 50 gallon cube.

I agree with the few that stated spot treatment. I bought aiptasia x when I first started and it worked. Never had to use it again.

Syringe with one of the following injected right into the mouth will also work:

Lemon juice
Vinegar
Boiling water

If you can do it in a 5g bucket with no flow. That will work best; however they may not open for you after the move.

Kalk paste spread over them also works.

Would a couple of mililiters of venigar or lemon juice per specimen have any significant effect on pH?

Peppermint Shrimp have never worked for me. As stated before, spot treat them. My preferred treatment is Cold Press Lemon Juice with a bit of Hydrogen Peroxide added to it. Using a syringe stab them in the center of the mouth and inject them with the mixture. I find if the lemon juice doesn't melt them down the Hydrogen Peroxide will make them release there hold from the rock in a few seconds. Watch for them floating in the water column then net them out and flush them. Works every-time for me and nothing else is effected in the tank..

Okay thanks!
I think I'll try this tonight once they're out more. I have the rock acting as an island in the sand right now so hopefully I won't end up with more on the "reef" later.

I had hundreds of them in my 20 gallon. Matted filefish ate every last one of them in 4 weeks. Can't find a single aptiasa now.

I use aiptasia-x. Seems to work OK. The main thing is to be persistent and diligent. I attack as soon as I see one. It may take a couple tries to wipe it out. I havent had to try an animal yet, but I would not hesitant if Im losing the battle.

Does your file fish eat regular food when the aiptasia is gone ? Any trouble with it picking at other corals ?

Can I use shelf stable lemon juice from the store for aiptasia? Or would any preservatives in it mess my tank up?

Aiptasia x has done a good job for me. I hunt them at least every other day. I am seeing less and less of them.

I use all natural Lakewood cold press lemon juice. It is pure 100% lemon juice, no preservatives. I am sure lemon concentrate will work just as well.

I also read that peppermint shrimp were good aptaisia control. That’s why I got my 4. And you do have to watch out for camel shrimp, they look pretty close to peppermint twins 0.0
