Hey all....i have the newa 50r. Just realised that it's light isnt cutting it. Im thinking about getting a hob filter for it and new lighting. My eye was on the prime hd.

Currently have a couple of clownfish and some softs.....gsp, leathers zoanthids.

This however will force me to sacrifice my skimmer. Will running the aquarium without a skimmer work? I also intend to hide the heater in the hob.

Any suggestions or critiques? Thanks

I have an Aquaclear 110 hob filter and a Tunze 9001 skimmer fits inside this filter. Granted I have a 25 gallon and you have a 50 gallon but it produces skimmate continously and it provides lots of oxygen as well. I also have carbon, GFO, Purigen and matrix rocks for added biofiltration in this filter as well. Works very well for me.

Mine is a 50litre :) might give it a go without a skimmer

You can easily keep a tank that size without the use of a skimmer. I had a 60g cube for 22 years without a skimmer and it did just fine. Just stay on top of water changes.
