Angelfish ID

I bought this fish as a juvi chrysurus a little less than a year ago from divers den. Becoming more and more convinced that isn’t what I got. I emailed live aquaria a couple months back and didn’t get a response. Doesn’t really look like a chrysurus, an asfur or a maculosus at this point. What do you guys think?

From Michael's Angelfishes and butterflyfishes book, it looks the most like P. asfur to me. It has too many thin vertical stripes, instead of fewer thicker ones, to be chrysurus, I think.

At least you know it's not an emperor, or Koran...lol.

Maybe humaguy will stop by here.

Looks like the same fish, but as for what it is..far from unanimous. Whatever it is, growing really fast.

looks like asfur, esp as it is changing while still quite small, macs usually do that when larger, but that is a crazy mislabeled fish, if that is the case.

This one was the first one I got and raised until it changed colors and I traded the tank and fish to a friend. I wish I would of got a picture of the tail, but I am 99.99% sure it was just like the other one I pictured in the first post.

Sorry about adding so many different post to your thread but I am glad I have an external hard drive where I keep all my pictures. The funny thing about this guy was I bought it from The Marine Center in Dallas on a Thursday for a quick flight to San Antonio Friday morning, but got lost in transit, finally it made it to San Antonio FEDEX where I had to argue with someone at the hub to go and get it from one of the trucks where it was set up to be delivered on Monday. I then placed it in a QT tank with liverock where it took 4 weeks to eat pellets, and the whole time I had it the only thing it would eat was pellets. Sorry I believe like the others LA owes you a Chrysurus, nothing less

Have had two asfurs (never a mac), and that's exactly what they looked like as they were changing into their adult clothes.

Won’t make a big stink about it, the asfur’s are pretty cool looking. Came in super tiny, 1 3/4 was generous. It looked like a little leaf in the bag. Around 4 inches now, a bit aggressive as it grows.

It would have been nice to at least get a response from LA, but it went ignored so I stopped ordering from them.

I have been able to get costumer support on the phone pretty easily. It might be worth a try. Maybe they would give you some store credit.

It wasn’t just that. Kept getting sent divers den fish with lymph right out of the bag, and lost a few that just never ate. The guarantee was great, but the fish were still dead or diseased. It’s not about the money.

It seemed to me the quality went down and the price went up.

macs from the red sea, persian gulf, and the gulf of oman do change when small but are seen less frequently. they are more commonly collected off the coast of east africa and change when enormous. they are tough fish and easy to keep.

asfur as juvis have more blue bands and the yellow develops more quickly than macs. juvis can change to adult while only a few inches, while macs can still show juvi coloration at several inches. the yellow band has variations based on region-short and small are from the gulf of aquaba, in the interior red sea. the yellow band is large, sometimes reaching the ventral on individuals from the gulf of aden. asfur more cautious than macs and may hide more

your adorable dd pic does like like it has more blue bands and it is getting thay yellow so early but "only time will tell"

A year later this guy is still growing and eating like a pig and I still don’t know what kind of fish it is! I’ll get an updated pic tonight. Still has a lot of the juvi coloration at about 4/5 inches....

Agree and like Ted mentioned before Asfur's change to adult coloration at a much smaller size.
