I recently switched to a kessil a80 Light on my Biocube. I’ve never had the option to play around with the color of my lights before coming from t5’s. Over the past month I’ve noticed my corals react better when I crank the color to all blue. They open more, I see more growth etc. Does anyone else see this same reaction or played around with it? Even if I go 70% blues, my corals deflate and close up. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180303/dc7a079e959ac0fd6b9fec4224385471.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180303/5bb32fbc7a906f8b9b8ed165b2283e29.jpg

I’m confused, correct me if I’m wrong. First you state that when you crank the blues the corals open up. Then you state that when the blues are up to seventy percent they deflate & close up?

Yes. They don’t close up completely. Just look less lively. If it’s anything other than 100% blues, that’s when I notice a change in my zoas and lps.

I went all blue a few months ago as part of a multiple step plan to rid my tank of a bad case of cyano and my corals now look better than ever and are growing. It is an LPS tank, with some soft. I run my white channels at 10 to 15% max, and that is after a gradual increase to mid day. The K spectrum is between 20000 and 21000K.

Btw, I completely rid the tank of cyano, but believe the remedy was an RO/DI filter change and 50, 100, and 200 micron filter pads in my sump, replacing sponges. I only run the 50 microns when I can monitor the tank closely, as they clog (slow the water flow between sump baffles) quickly. Even the 100 will do so after a day or so.

When your light is perfect it should have a slight purple hue.

lots of coral over extend to capture more light, when you are super heavy into the blue you are simulating deeper water, a comfort zone for lots of LPS and softies, there is a balance of good color and intensity that I am still trying to figure out with my kessils (2 a160we over my 40br). I'll tell you when they hit 100% intensity the polyps are noticably shrunken. I havent found the sweet range for my tank yet but i've only had the lights a month or so.

Is it safe to say every tank is different? I just wasn’t sure if there was any scientific proof for best coral growth or if it’s all subjective.

Hunh?

Every tank is different. For many reasons.
Surface agitation, yellowing of the water, particulates in the water, distance of the lights off the water, tank size (depth).........etc, etc..

I believe. Your question in reality, is towards light intensity not about the blues. Your noticing a change in your coral because of increased light or not. Not the “color” of light. In which case, as mentioned earlier in the thread. Coral will open or expand to capture more light and shrink when there’s too much light. To protect itself from excess oxygen.
